what the hell is hip flair?

Normally jeans tend to be pretty fitted around your hip (at least here on SF) but if the jeans sit slightly relaxed then they can give off an added bit of fabric around your hips. Here's an example on the loosest jeans I know, some Academis:

When a jean bulges (or "flares") out at the side of the hip, due to the way the jean is cut. A lot of repro type cuts have some hip-flare.. [eternal 811 is somewhat notorious for hipflare, a.k.a. diaper ass] Hip flare is reduced when a jean is cut more square in the top block. Generally when you lie the jean down flat on the ground, the legs lie more or less parallel. Denim with hip flarez often curve outward to accommodate hip room and the legs lie at an angle. Hmm.. did that make sense?

Is hemming raw denim any different from getting trousers/chinos hemmed? Should I drive 30 minutes and then spend 20 minutes looking for parking to get them hemmed at Self Edge or get them hemmed at the place where I get my other pants/shirts altered? Would it make a difference?

Are monkstraps too MCish?

Even on jeans that do fit, stretching seems to gradually produce some hip flare. My Mics are a good example. Fortunately they're not tight anywhere so it doesn't look bad at all in motion.

Only if you want your hem chainstitched (and get some fancy-looking roping effect). If you don't care about the kind of stitching, any tailor can do it for you.

Actually, NDG Classics are a bit fuller than New Standards, with more room and the thighs and less taper from the knee down. They are also quite hard to fade.

People keep saying they are medium/high rise but the front rise is only about 0.5" higher than New Standards. Back rise is only a bit higher as well. They are by no means "dad jeans".

Ok, stupid question. I'm breaking in a pair of Nudie Average Joe's. Worn them two days so far. Right underneath the back pockets, kind of where my leg ends and my butt starts, the excess denim folds upward. Is that normal? It's very uncomfortable. On another note. The jeans are just a tad too long. I don't cuff them, but fold them up about 1/2 inch on the bottom. Just the little hem part. Will that leave any funky long lasting marks? How about regular cuffing? Does that leave marks if you end up wearing them uncuffed?

Dunno, who looks pretty oldman-ish wearing his monks.

Point taken. The NS would be considered medium rise by most though.

Thanks much for the advice. If #1 is the case, then that's kind of an issue, since I've never found any jeans with NO hip flare. The NC's are probably the best pair I've ever had, and I worry that anything slimmer would make my thighs look like sausages. I have absolutely no arse, big quads, relatively small hamstrings, moderately big calves, and scrawny ankles. That makes it hard to find jeans that fit perfectly in the top block without being too tight in the legs. Would squats help? Anyway, even in the 4 days I've had the NC's, the hip flare has essentially become invisible from the front. It's just a bit apparent when looking from the back. I really do appreciate the advice, though. (And I dig the monkstraps. You should try wearing them unstrapped like those crazy Milanese guys on the Sartorialist)

I recently bought some NC's that were lightly used and the color is great. I can button up the waist and the waist is perfect but the legs are a bit tight to my liking. How much will theyy stretch out in the thigh and calf? Can i hand stretch the thigh and calf? Suggestions?

^ Thighs and calves usually don't stretch much, but you can always try spraying water over the problem areas. The denim will become softer over time, which helps as well.
