no , i understand that. what i dont get is that samurai is universally popular on two fora that are more inclined for slim fits.

They're popular here? I can't remember the last time I saw someone wearing Samis that didn't spend a majority of their time on sufu.

They tend to be far, far more into repro brands than we are here. It would make sense.

It's a more classic cut, with widely spaced back pockets, bigger legs, and a medium rise. It's function over fashion. Most denim-nerds like jeans for the sake of jeans, not for how they make your ass look. Samurai designs used to be pretty faithful to old Levi's, including arcuates and red tab. They're built like tanks. The denim used to be the absolute best you could buy (may still be... I'm out of the loop). And the hidden details give you the confidence that only a bottle of Beam can top. That's why they're so popular.

so Samurai is for more of the jean purist. i see.

Hmm. I thought the S710 cut, at least, would be a slimmer, modern-er cut. So I wouldn't be going for the repro look as much as I would be aiming for a standard slim fit.

So with S5000's nay'd, it's still KMW 1980 vs S710XX I guess. Only qualm I have about the 1980s is the dropped large back pocket (not really a problem I guess). With the Sammies it's more an issue of unintentionally sizing wrong, but I think I can choose between 32/33 correctly as long as I get to visit BiG to try them on. Talk about SuFu-favored brands aside, do you think I'd go wrong with either, would the taper on the S710s (even hemmed) overwhelm my 5' 7" frame, etc?

I hate myself for jumping around like this, but purchases like these deserve lots of thought I guess?

Something worth saying about the S5000VX that I might as well say here: it works less well in larger sizes than in smaller sizes, I think. It's not a slim fit for anyone, but pictures on sufu worn by 30" waist dudes look classic, while in 35" it looks close to Relaxed Fit. I still like them, but of my three fancy denim purchases (APC NS, S5000VX, SEXFH05) it's the one I'm least satisfied with. I'd get them hemmed and tapered if I trusted someplace around here to do it.

(Related gripe: at 35" or 36" waist, tons of jeans droop down over Chucks and drag on the ground that do not do so at smaller sizes. And most people here and on sufu are tiny, so you get a mistaken idea of how things will fit by looking at pictures of them.)

Quick question: I love the look of the Nudie SSDS, and I can get a decent price on them. My problem is I have a very hard body to size. I'm 6' 2" 180, 33/32 and the hardest part is I have huge thighs (I'm a collegiate goalie for water polo and thus my legs are huge, they are a good 24.5 inches around at the largest part). How do I figure out what thigh size is right for me to wear? I like my jeans tight but not skin tight. Would the SSDS be ok for me after they wore in? I would probably get 32/34s and hem them to 33s but I'm super worried about the thighs. My calves aren't very big so I don't need to worry about that. EDIT: Oh yeah, I have a big hispanic butt too :P

I don't think you'd have trouble getting into SSDS 33. I wouldn't size down if that was your original intent if you're really that nervous. The only reason I went down from 32 to 31 was because of the waist being about 0.5-1" larger than tagged.

The thing is, I am right at 33 in "normal" jeans (Levis?). I've heard Nudies, especially SSDSs, will stretch almost an inch or more in the waist, and I will be losing a few pounds/restructuring my body within the next 6 months or so. I don't want to get too large of a waist size and have them be too loose after only a few wears. Plus the difference in thigh size from the 32 to the 33 is 11.3 to 11.4, not enough of a difference for me to choose the 33s over the 32s. Would this be proper reasoning or am I missing something?

Saying you plan on losing weight kinda plays a factor when asking for sizing advice...I've probably gotten about .5" or so out of the waistband on mine so a full inch shouldn't be that hard. It usually helps to know the actual size and not the tagged size (Levi's) when comparing jeans but ime you should be fine with the 32s. If you're super nervous then what's stopping you from going RRDS?

im ready to dive into my next pair of premium denim..from past posts and gathering information..ive come up with a couple of pairs.. 5EP Straight 5EP LDB 5EPxSF (no one really gave me this suggestion, but on denimbar..it describes it as the perfect jean) KMW 1980 KMW 1950 im looking for something that is not too baggy not too skinny, which translates into something like a 16" leg opening, and basically all of the above jean qualifies...can anyone help narrow it down some more? im a size 30 and wear 29 in APC NS because i prefer the looser fit.
