Hey everyone - I have a bit of a dilemma in which I would love someone to help me out with: I am a long wearer of Levi 511s, and now I want to purchase a pair of dry denim jeans, most notably Nudies. I want a size that is similar to 511s, therefore I began looking at Slim Jims and Grim Tims. I did the measurements (leg opening) and the Slim Jims seem more like a Levi 514, a straight fit, rather than a slim fit. And the Grim Tims are a slim fit, but not a tight fit, which is what I want because Levi 510 are a tight fit and they don't fit me haha.

This is me wearing a pair of 511s:

I have muscular calves hence why I do not wear the 510s because they are skin tight.
So, Grim Tim would be the way to go correct?

Also, I heard that we should size down when buying dry denim - I am a 32x32 in a Levi 511 - 6 foot at ~160lbs.. so I should get 31x23 in the Nudie Grim Tim?

Can someone please explain to me how exactly Levis Shrink-to-Fit work? What exactly is the appeal of buying pants that shrink? What should I know before I buy? (E.g., do I need to go up a size? Why or why not?) How are you supposed to prep and maintain them? In other words, I need a StF intro. Lol.

You're lazy.

Generally the idea is that you buy the jeans about 2 sizes up to account for the shrinking. But each designer will have more specific sizing advice since this can vary vastly from one denim to the next. Find one that you like and research it well.

So I'm looking for some white denim: any suggestions? I'm not sure if I ought to do raw denim of some type since a lot of the appeal of that is the fading? Also, I'm a pretty bulky guy so if anyone can recommend something for a dude with pretty beefy thighs I'd appreciate it.

Buy them two inches longer and your waist size for snug fit since they'll stretch back out (aka tight as **** hard to button at first) or add an inch if you want relaxed.

I am an avid Levi 511 wearer, I like the skinny fit but it isn't too skinny (I have big calves but 511 fit perfectly) I do not wear the 510s because they are too skinny.

Would it be best to purchase a pair of Grim Tims or Slim Jims? I am afraid that the GTs will be too tight around my calves and that the SJs will be too baggy.. I want a cut like the Levi 511s, which would be better to choose?

Also, in the levis, I am a 32x32.. I size down when purchasing Nudies correct? therefore a 31x32?

It is true to say, though, that historically most denim went from greencast to redcast as natural indigo gave way to synthetic. Whether they modified other processes, for instance the mordants they used, and how significant that was is intriguing. THe very first Cone fabric, from the early 20s, is very dark and red-cast indeed, and Cone put most of that down to the fact they were using their earlier rope-dyed process with the synthetic indigo. I wonder if there any records on what mordants they used and whether those changed over the same period...

Indigo dye doesn't need mordants from what I've read

That is true. Indigo sits on the surface of cotton, without forming a chemical bond, that's partly what gives it its wear characteristics as the molecules chip off.

But users have used it in countless different ways. William Morris experiemnted with it, and according to Jennifer Balfour Paul, the authority on the subject, wrote to a friend: "it would be a week's talk to tell you all the anxieties and possibilites connected with this indigo subject..."
