I had some airport people look through their drawers for old stickers.

Also, some hotels and tour groups still use luggage stickers as a means of identifying customers' luggage when picking them up at the airport, etc.

Globetrotter tell me that the Orient finish is stronger than the standard finish.

I don't believe them.

And yes LabelKing your stickers will stick.

I briefly considered Globetrotter before settling on Rimowa. The locks on the GT looks too flimsy to me, although I'm sure in reality they will endure much abuse.

Been using Zero Halliburton for years. Sure gets dented but very unique styling.

I like Tumi ballistic nylon. Mine had held up well for ten years and it cleans up nicely.

I love my Victorinox cases. First of all, they have a lifetime guarantee. The wheels are inline skating wheels and are set as far apart as possible. This, along with a non-telescopic pull handle, allows great handling when you're pulling the luggage on uneven or cobblestone streets. A lot of thought went into the overall design: well-placed pockets, durable zippers with large teeth, etc. The handles are very well designed also.

I've had some Tumi for ten years or longer and it has done very well. For a new pilot I think Tumi would be a "fit." Most pilots won't have this nice of luggage. If you go higher end, the luggage will look out of place and you'll be known as the pilot with the expensive luggage...keep in mind that the pilot pulls his luggage on the plane with him. For example Zero Halliburton would be the wrong image I think...that is the case they always use in the movies to deliver the money or...

I personally would avoid some of the higher end luggage unless you are going to fly private - the luggage will get beat up if you check it and overhead is a nightmare. Also I've had luggage disappear in storage/bellman at luxury hotels and transfer to limo to the airport. So unless you are going to babysit your luggage I would avoid the luxury goods. I have better luck with the standard black Tumi which goes without notice by most people. (Actually I prefer Boyt when Tumi went through a patch but Boyt have changed their lines so stay with Tumi) I reserve the nice bags for the trip to that I personally place the car for the weekend in Napa or Tahoe...

As a side note - don't put your luggage on your bed after returning home. I had a friend who worked for Ecolabs and he told me some of the stories of bedbugs in some great resorts. Bad bad idea.

I recommend Samsonite... if you want broken/lost zippers within a couple of years of use.

What bugs me about my Victorniox (I have the 27" Werks") which is fine. THe thing that bugs me is that I can't balance my laptop case on the handle since its a single, rather thin rod versus a double scoping one.

I use a Kirkland Signature (COSTCO) for my rolling carryon, which has served me well so far. Its cheap, around 100 bucks and holds up well.

Why is "Recommend me some luggage" in the "Dumb Threads" sub-forum?

For your flight bag, I'd recommend a chocolate-brown BALLY pilot's briefcase in the standard shape and size - assuming BALLY still makes them. I used to be approached by pilots asking where I got mine.

If you are doing long-haul intercontinental flights, you may want to consider a Zero Halliburton suitcase equipped with TSA "friendly" locks.

Briggs and Riley luggage are good, and the manufacturer ads say it will repair them even for damage due to airline handling. An airline pilot who does mainly regional US or European flights may need only their pilot's case and a garment bag.

As far as flight crew's luggage looking beat-up - friends in the industry have confided that newer crew members (flight deck and cabin crew) sought out and used beat-up cases, coz that made them appear as "experienced" crew. To the extent that they'd leave newly issued uniforms, shoulder boards and all, in chlorinated swimming pools or in the sun for days to give them the faded look.
