ok i would like to get some nice luggage once i get out of college and start my career as a pilot. anybody have any recommendations? i would like it to be less than $1,000 for a 3 piece set. hand bag, large and medium size suitcases.

Well mate, most of the pilot luggage I've seen is pretty beat up after a lot of use so I wouldn't recommend something too lavish, just strong.

You going for a regional or mainline contract?

I like briggs and riley and tumi, myself. I just saw a new briggs and riley model rolling horizontal tri fold garment bag that I would get if I was in the market for luggage. If I were you, I would go for a tumi catalog case - they just re-introduced a large rolling catalog case. I have the older version, which I like, but I like this one better. and then a rolling tri fold garment bag. I don't think a man needs any more luggage than a good catalog case and a tri fod garment bag. and you should be able to get both for about $1K, in ballistic.

Either buy Valextra, Louis Vuitton or E. Goyard
Otherwise, buy cheap plastic suitcases; anything else is a false economy.

I like Zero Halliburton.

You left out Globetrotter, whose cases are very good. Is Goyard really any good? I looked at some of their soft bags and saw no intrinsic worth - they had nothing to distinguish them but the name. Their hard cases might be better. T.Anthony's hard cases are also quite good. Edit - it is also hard to argue that Tumi represents false economy. I know of no one who has ever had the stuff wear out on them (myself included). It is also very well designed, though you may need to take the time to identify the right piece for your needs.

Globetrotter - but only the basic ones for professional use.

I have their Orient large carry-on which is the only luggage I have ever had which had caused strangers stop me and pay complements to my case, but I dare not put it in the hold without wrapping on those airlines where the carry-on sizes are below standard size.

I'll second Globetrotter. E Goyard do make some very good cases, I think you may have had a bad experience.
Tumi to me looks like a very cheap, nasty product. Maybe there's something to it, but I cannot see it.

More of a fashion victim than I expected, Bouji. What about some hard-sided leather cases from Swaine Adeney?

I am very very hard on bags. my tumis and my briggs and riley have done very well. tumi went through a period where their chief designer was an idiot, but they are back on track. on top of that, pretty much any damage you do to your bags, both companies will fix, or replace.

I like the Orient finish, but am concerned about the lacquer's durability, and the question of whether stickers will stick is vastly important.

srsly, does anywhere still put stickers on luggage? I mean, you could buy them on ebay or something and put them on yourself, but that's cheating...
