John Varvatos - You like? - Page 4

I like his overall look. The guy has talent. But I never pull the trigger on buying any of his clothing. Everything seems to be a bit lightweight and sorta flimsy IMO.

I am also a fan. Own 3 pairs of his sandals.

I'm really impressed by how he reworked CBGBs. I went to many a "Sunday Hardcore Matinee" show there back in the days, and fondly remember that odor of piss and sweat. I think that JV did a good job of preserving some of the the original feeling while cleaning it up and making it very high end. It's a beautiful store. And it's a hell of a lot better than another CVS.

I think I read that Starbuck's wanted to move in as well. The Barneys outlet store about 15 minutes from my house carries so much John Varvatos and John Varvatos Star USA, I wouldn't be surprised if the stock outnumbered the in-house brand. It tends to go on clearance real quick and that's the only way I would consider buying any part of the collection. Most of it is basics though, jeans, polos, tees, shirts, and maybe some sweaters/outerwear. I think $95 is ridiculously overpriced for a tee from his diffusion line, although I could probably get away with paying $20-$40 if I waited long enough (And wore a size L) As for his Jack Purcell collaborations, I have 1 pair. I can't compare it to he original JPs though since I've never owned a pair. Although I would definitely consider it now. His collections, though, are usually one of my favorites every season. I just like the way they look.

i'm new to the game, and unfamiliar with how John Varvatos normally prices, but their "casual" line seems extremely expensive. Are the clothes and shoes made in the US? or are they just expensive
post #51 of 67
Just expensive. You're paying for the style. Up to you as to whether you like it enough to make it worth it. For me it is worth it on some pieces.

I like a lot of his stuff, but I agree that it's way too expensive for the quality/construction, etc etc.

A lot of what I have seen (tees, shirts, sweaters, basics) at the Barneys Outlet were made in China or Hong Kong or something. I think it's the same with most of the stuff at his boutiques.

Anybody have any experience with his overcoats? I bought one yesterday from Century21 for half off. Seems like a good deal and it fits me perfectly, but the material doesn't seem thick enough to keep me warm in NYC winters. It's 70% wool 30% nylon. Eh.

they just opened a bunch of stores here in korea at all the major department stores. given that the retail pricing is quite high back in the US, i could only imagine how astronomical it will be here.

but then again theory here in korea is pretty rape prices despite majority of the inventory coming from japan and not the us. cuts are much slimmer and appealing.

The designs are very nice. I really like their jackets and coats range. This being said, I find them a little over priced for what they are. A jacket I liked was about $700 which is a lot for a made in china item IMHO.

They do have certain pieces made in Italy as well.

A couple pieces are rather expensive for what they are, but a bunch of them go on sale. I have a sweater/hoodie that originally sold for 240ish that I got for about 80 (which IMO would have been a more reasonable price for what it was).

besides that, his contemporary mens pieces, like the one's you'll find at nieman marcus, catch my eye usually a bit more than most of the other fare in stores.

I like the cut on most of his Chinos. I have a pair with patch pockets.

Who can help with sizing on the Varvatos chucks? I am interested in the rubberized ones. I wear an 11.5 in the premium Chucks (the ones that are like $10 more and have a nicer insole). I've tried on regular Chucks and thought, in those, I was a size down, an 11. How do the new season Varvatos run?
