So, how many suits do you own?

First, let me say I am new to wearing suits for work (for the past two months). I own seven and a sport coat with a few pair of wool trousers that I rotate. I began wearing the suits before the NY Times article led me here, but I am thoroughly enjoying the exchange of opinons and knowledge I am acquiring. So, if you wear a suit daily, is seven enough? If I maintain my rotation (basically a different suit every Monday and then a quasi random selection Tuesday - Friday) I will wear the same suit every seven weeks. Can you tell I am an engineer desperately trying to be fashionable now? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Six summer (8oz fabric) weight and six winter weight (10-12 oz fabric) give you variety and temperature control. From there, twenty to 24 will give you a selection for any weather or occasion. A coupe of those would usually be purely weekend suits. Above that you're in the realm of the dedicated hobbyist. Will

I own about 10-12 suits and 10-12 jackets, and wear a suit about every other day. I think you could get away with a 7 suit rotation assuming they were suitable to the weather conditions, I don't have to worry about that where I am.

I don't know if what I am about to type constitutes hijacking my own proposed thread, but... My follow up question to those who post is how many shirts do you own? Is there a general ratio of X shirts to Y suits? Does it vary depending on the fabric pattern of the suit, i.e. stripes, solids, etc? Thanks again.

I have about 24-30 dress shirts, so maybe 1-1.5 per jacket.

Newsuit, 7 suits is just fine. Personally I think 4 is plenty, any more and you're just doing it for your own sartorial pleasure more than necessity. Do keep a good variety of dress shirts, however, so it doesn't look like you're wearing the same outfit every day.

21 suits, 8 sport coats, 20 pairs odd trousers, 59 shirts and 150 +/- ties... oh and 54 pairs of shoes (not counting trainers, flip flops, deck shoes, etc) and 15 belts. Roughly 1/3 need to be replaced with higher quality better fitting, but I'm working on it.

I wouldn't go above 5 suits, preferably mid-weight 3-season. One navy, one charcoal, something in a pinstripe, and the other two whatever other colors I want.

7 suits at the moment, and about 25-30 dress shirts. But I wear mine only 3 days a week.

I'll say what ever you want me to say but PM me with the dimensions you NEED. You are the third person in the last 24 hours to ask me that. www.CarloFranco.com a local favorite on the forum here Member name Chuck can probably help more on the Long issues. JJF

Will is right.  That is, for everyone but older guys (well, this one) whose weight seems to change even more often than the seasons.  (For at least twenty-five years I weighed between 194 and 197 pounds.  Now, at age 62, I swing wildly between 225 to 195.)  Though I possess four navy suits--three of them MTM in the past three or four years--only one comes close to fitting. . . .this week.   So twenty-four suits would for me be an absolute minimum.  (And I own about that number. . . . )

What have I been smoking?   The actual count: 11 suits; 2 dinner jackets; 8 sport coats/blazers; two topcoats; 2 raincoats, three robes, one cap and gown. Simple addition was never my strong suit.  (Sentential calculus, on the other hand. . . )
