Elliptical Trainer

I'm looking to buy an elliptical trainer for my house. Primarily, this is for my parents. I've heard its better on the knees than a treadmill. I'm willing to spend some money on something of quality but I don't want it to be too big. I don't where to go for reviews because most of the site seem bias.

Here's a link to a one I like:

Is walking or biking out of the question?

Yea, I could always return. As for walking and biking, they have too many excuses. They watch this Indian version of novellas nightly like its a drug. I figured with the TV in the same room they'll hop on the machine eventually.

I love using the elliptical at the gym. It is way easier on my knees and I can't fake it like I could in spin class.

My only recommendation is to get one that actually tells you what the hell you're supposed to be aiming for. My old gym had ones that did that (maintain a certain rpm or something), but my condo's gym has some older ones. I manage, but I'd love it if there was more better indication of what I was supposed to be doing other than walking. Since your parents aren't really into exercising (it sounds like) the more direction the better, probably.

That's a good point, but if his parents are getting older and also aren't into exercising, the main point is going to be to get them on the machine in any fashion, as they might not be in good enough shape to maintain certain rpm, or hit some other target goal.

+1, If they won't exercise on their own anyways they aren't going to just start because you buy an elliptical for them. You need them to want to exercise before anything else helps.

Other posters make a good point. Will your parents actually use it? It could be money down the drain.

My wife loathes going to the gym but I eventually got her to join. It took (expensive) appointments with a personal trainer to get her going regularly. Once she had done that, then she was okay on her own.

Everyone has their own motivator.

I have to agree, when I was living at home, my mom bought a gym quality treadmill. While she was keen to use it when she first got it to please my dad, it really hasn't gotten any use since. I used everyday while it's there, but for the same price, my mom could have gotten a membership to a good gym for four or five years.

Lots of good points above. The first thing to do is to create a desire to exercise and live more healthily. Without that, you'll be wasting your money. And afterwards, having a treadmill or eliptical machine at home is a secondary matter of slightly increased convenience. I'd say save your money until you can get your parents to regularly go for walks.
