What’s the % you spend out of the saddle when biking? - Page 2

Previous posters have it. Riding in Florida there is just no reason to get out of the saddle, ever. If you want to "climb" go to the gym and take a spinning class.

While Lance was great at climbing seated and spinning at a high cadence, he also frequently came out of his saddle to launch attacks, ala the "Lance Dance." The 2001 Tour especially comes to mind where he blew away Ullrich and danced up L'Alpe d'Huez standing on his pedals.

usually for a climb or if i have to skidstop (i ride fixed), my commute to work is pretty flat or downhill (if i'm running late) for the most part, but i've been trying to spend more time in the saddle.

i stay in the saddle for as long as i can going up hills, i try to stay in a low gear and keep a high cadence then if i start falling off i get out of the saddle.

i agree with the majority here. less than 1% out of the saddle. usually when i'm doing plus 70 miles and i need to change up position. also, when the road condition gets muddy/wet/bad what have you and i need to float my weight off a wheel.

you need to learn to climb seated.

so far as saddles go: to each their own. a majority seems to love the fizik arione. i would have bought that but had always loved my flight saddles and got a great deal on a similar Rever.

I live very close to the Alps, so every other sunday ride will include SERIOUS hills. While I favour riding seated I stick to a rhythm of 1 min standing for 5 min seated on the long (3000 ft+ vertical gain) climbs to relax muscles esp. hamstrings. Other than that I only stand for full acceleration or on really steep climbs. If I take a 5 mile detour on my ride back from work, I have to climb a hill with 18% incline in two places.

Thread Starter
Well I went for about 35 miles on Saturday and I spent about 5% of my total ride out of the saddle and increased both my speed and kept my cadence at a steadier pace. I think however after reading the thread and searching on bike forums, I need to learn how to better position myself on and about my seat during my rides.

I can climb while seated, but I personally like to climb out of the saddle, since I tend to climb quite a bit faster...although I have the luxury of not needing to climb either steep inclines or for long distances.

Jon.

Yep, I do the same. We have some pretty nice sustained climbs in Malibu. I bought compact cranks and my climbing improved considerably.
