I dont have the opportunity to wear a suit very often, but when i do, i dont own one to wear.

Im not looking for much and it doesnt seem like there is anything in the buysell forum mysize but if anyone has a size 36R (or short? im 5'6") let me know

If you're 5'6", you should probably be in the market for a 36s. I'm 5'9" myself, and I still prefer my jackets a little on the shorter side appearance-wise.

I suspect most of the gents in the Men's Clothing forum would agree that few things look worse than an ill-fitting suit. Bearing that in mind, it really does behoove you to select a suit in person, and with the assistance of a knowledgeable tailor. That said, may I suggest the Nordstrom's men's department? I have only a couple experiences with them personally, but apparently the place has a cult following. I've heard others say that the people that work there are very professional; friendly, helpful, no-nonsense, and quite knowledgeable. Again, I haven't done much business with them myself, but were I to judge the store based on the two times I purchased a suit there, I would concur with such praise. (caveat: As I understand it, the inventory from store to store varies quite a bit with the economic status of the area in which it's located. This may or may not be relevant for your situation. ) I don't know what your price range is, or what you deem "starter," but I am quite certain that unless you are looking for high-end bespoke items, you'll find something there that will....I almost typed "something that will suit you" heh....something that will meet your needs nicely. Good luck. And when you *do* pull the trigger, post some pictures, eh?

i'm the same height. it's tough man. I've honestly found the best otr suits are old vintage YSL suits in a 36s. amazing fit actually. tough to find though

This is a suit i would wear sparingly so there is no need to empty my savings for one. As well, im 21 and still deep in post secondary so there is no job lined up where a suit is a necessity, i just would like one for when the odd opportunity comes to wear one. i would prefer to go vintage or used, and preferably cheap :P

I'm in pretty much the exact same boat.
Tips would be much appreciated.

Don't know if you'll be interested, but I have a slim fitting 2 button 38S by Tombolini that I was getting ready to put up on ebay. It's very slim fitting, more so than any other 38 I've had. It's black with white pinstripes about 1/4" or so apart, dual vent, high gorge and button stance and slim flat front pants. I think it's half canvassed (lapels feel canvassed and has decent roll, but body is fused) Made in Italy. Buttons have been replaced by horn buttons from Tom James.

I wore it twice only for a few hours each time, still in what I would call a "like-new" condition with no rips, holes or tears. I don't believe it has ever been dry cleaned.

Don't know if you know your measurements, seeing as how you're looking for a starter suit but here they are. (I just happen to have them because, like I said, I was getting ready to put it up on Ebay)

Shoulder: 18"
Chest: 39"
Sleeves: 25.75"
Length: 31" (from top of collar)

Pants:
32" waist
31" inseam
42" Outseam

The thing to figure out is if the shoulders are going to fit you or not. Wouldn't want to sell you something that you can't use.

EDIT:

Since a couple of people have PM'ed me indicating interest, here are some pics to help you decide. Price is $195 shipped to the continental US.

I can do you a short-ish 36R jacket (see sig) but no suits at present.

If you don't know your size yet, I second the earlier advice to try a few on in person to be sure how you fit in a few different brands. Good luck!
