How are you measuring the chest? The measurements seem way off.

Did you have the buttons done up? A 42 should have at least a 44-inch chest. A 40-inch chest would fit a 38, and would be fairly lean at that.

A coat's size usually represents the measurement of the wearer's chest. As such, the coat must be bigger than the guy's chest to give him room to breathe and move. Usually the chest will be 2-4 inches larger than the labeled size.

You might run into suits, now and then, that run extremely small, but all three of these seem to do so, and that makes me wonder.

You want to button the coat, lay it flat, lift the arms, then measure from the outer edges of the coat just below each armpit seam. Here's A_Harris' helpful illustrated guide:

Sizes fixed up...
Thanks!

Still seem off, for whatever that's worth. RLPL does run slim, but the chest measurement should be at least equal do, or generally a bit more than, the size. In other words, a 40-inch chest on a 42 suit seems strange. Similarly, a 44-inch chest on a size 46 suit doesn't sound right. Twenty-five inch sleeves also seem quite short for a 42L, is there additional material tucked underneath?

Is the Z Zegna a one-button or is that just the photo?

Lots of questions about pant sizes - the RLPL has a 38" waist, (and 26" sleeves); the Zegna has 32" waist, and the Polo has a 40.5" waist. All 3 are unfinished bottoms. And as always, Best Offers are accepted (although I may say 'no')

FWIW, I own a 38R Z Zegna 2-button SB "City" suit, the measurements on that jacket is more like a 42" chest, 18.5" shoulder. To me it seems to be closer to a "typical" 40R than a 38R.

This Zegna happens to be very tight - it's cut very narrow - for a real 38R/maybe even a little tighter - I personally wear a 40R - and I could barely fit the jacket on...
