What pocket square material do you like?

I'll try to word this better than my previous poll

I am new to wearing pocket squares and wanted to get the thoughts of the general membership. I know that it is easiest to start out with white linen, but what is your personal preference, and why?

Hard to say, most of my personal collection is edged linen -- I find them most versatile. But a nice patterned silk can be truly next level.

I prefer patterned silks nowadays. I used to stick to white linen, but have not worn one for nearly a year. The patterned silks give a nice, soft look that I like.

About the only type I don't have is solid colored silk pocket squares. They just don't do anything special for me. It reminds me of guys going to their prom.

Other than that I enjoy linen & cotton and printed patterned silk.

My tastes run from traditional (white linen) to unusual (looks like a printed newspaper that someone has written on).

I've got about a dozen solid silk ones, I usually match the color to the dominant color of the tie.
It seems to me a patterned pocket square unless it "matched" the tie would be to busy.
YMMV

I prefer white linen.
It works well with most of what I wear.

I agree with Kent Wang. Most of the one's I wear are white linen, because they go great with anything...especially in a business setting.

But it's hard to pick an overall favorite. I love wearing blazers with a shirt and no tie, so having a great patterned silk gives my outfit that "pop" I want. The more creative the color pattern the better for me.

I don't really like the solid silks too much. I usually match up a minor color in the tie with a square, or when I don't have a tie I just plop in any color.

I always go for linen (not necessarily plain white)

Silk, linen, cotton, cashmere... life is too short to limit oneself to one type of fabric. The only things to avoid at all costs are solid silk squares and plain white cotton (it's a hanky, not a pocket square).

White linen for business and patterned silk for casual wear.

I have a bunch of solid silk squares in case I can't find a patterned one that fits my outfit - so far, I have never worn a solid one.

I like silk squares because they are easy to fold - just smoosh 'em into the jacket pocket. If the first try looks bad, usually the 2nd or 3rd is fine.

The white ones with the colored borders are nice two. I think Kent Wang makes some as does http://www.bowties.com although the later are a tad pricey.

Cheers, Jim.

White linen is a classic look.

Only white silk for me. I like the contrast of the luxurious material with a casual outfit.

I wear a pocket square 99.9% of the time I wear a suit, sport coat, and or blazer.

I have been collecting them (pocket squares) for many years. At this juncture I probably have 5 - 6 dozen, the majority of which are printed patterns in silk, wool challis, linen, and cotton. I also have several solid woven jacquards in both cotton and silk as well as solid hemstitched linen in ecru and white.

The day's occasion and agenda will generally dictate whether the choice is more whimsical or serious and the type of fold I'll use.

An interesting question for all of you is what type of fold do you prefer?

??? Straight (Edge) - Points - or Puffed ???

I've got linen, cotton and silk squares but strongly prefer silk on most occasions. If a more subdued appearance is appropriate, as at a funeral, I will go with white linen. Otherwise I find white linen squares very bland and boring. Ceteris paribus, I prefer patterned to solid-colored silken squares, but I have plenty of the latter. In fact, I am wearing one at this moment. I am aware that some forumites have a prejudice against solid-colored silk squares, but if they were good enough for Fred Astaire....
