Hunting

Thread Starter
I've been wanting to go hunting for a while now, but I don't know how to start. I'd like to find somebody capable to teach me the ropes. Are there hunting clubs in the NY area where I could just join?

thanks,

Hunting clubs? Most clubs in the back woods sort of areas are 'fish and game' or 'rod and gun' which basically means a place to shoot and a bar, rather than a club, per se. NYC does have a very famous actual hunting club (in the sense I think you mean) that I'm sure would teach you everything you desire. The caveat is I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford it. http://www.griffinhowe.com/gameshootingsyndicate.cfm Hopefully someone else knows a better reference for you... ~ Huntsman

What type of hunting? Upland birds, waterfowl, small game, big game, dangerous game, varmints, bow, pistol? Or are you still undecided, and basically just want to play with guns and maybe kill something now and then?

I think your options in NYC for anything related to guns are going to be about nil. The Catskills are probably your closest reasonable option where there are probably dozens of rod and gun clubs. I belong to a club further Upstate, and it's mostly a decent bunch of nice redneck types who love to chat guns and hunting and impress newbies with their vast knowledge and brilliant opinions. They have all sorts of recreational tournaments for shotgun, pistol, and rifle, plus just general use of the range to plink around. I pay $50 a year.

Can you picture yourself making long day trips into the Catskills to pursue this?

The New York State hunter safety course is required before you can get a hunting license, and it's actually a pretty good intro to the whole hobby.

Happy to help with more info if you're interested.

I'll be happy to put you in touch with any one of the sub-contractors I use. They pretty much spend all of their time out hunting (rather than, say, working), that I'm sure I have an expert in whatever form of hunting you're looking for.

Just look at classifieds in rural areas. There are bound to be locals who offer trips.

However...you should first learn how to fire a gun or a bow.

Another alternative for shotgunning is trap shooting. While dropping the money to go on a trip or budgeting the time for it may be a stretch, going to the trap range for a day to shoot clay pigeons is cheap and easy. It also gives more immediate satisfaction than hunting because you're shooting at a lot of targets. Know that becoming a good hunter can take years and thousands of dollars in expenses. Also, if you are interested in gun hunting of any kind, take a safety course.

Do you know what you want to hunt? Organizations like Ducks Unlimited and Safari Club International might be a gateway. Here is a link for the Safari Club chapter in Manhattan:

Also, as someone mentioned, the NRA.
