A couple of questions re: how to post items for sale here

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

My name is Matt and I am a 22 year old who has just graduated from college. I am just beginning to gain knowledge about good dressing habits. I have been reading this forum for the past few weeks and am really starting to gain some great insights from it.

It has especially improved my thrift-shopping skills and now I am looking to subsidize the growth of my (largely second-hand) new wardrobe by selling some items online that I have found locally (great thrift shops here!) but which are not in my size. I was planning on selling on ebay but after reading some of the horror stories about that site and paypal from people here, I have decided to post items on this forum first. Before I make my first clothing post, I have a couple of questions:

1. What is an intelligent way to price clothing here? I hope to be selling only items in excellent condition from upper-middle range labels (e.g. Zegna, Kilgour, Brooks, Paul Stuart, etc). If the clothing is in great shape, does it work to take an approximate percentage (say 30% for example) of the general retail value of a similar item?

2. How do you on this forum generally exchange payment? (iow - Is taking a personal check or money order the easiest/smartest way?, Is it worth signing up for paypal?)

3. How do you measure the following parts on clothes: pants: waist and inseam; pants and suits: amount of material available to be let out/taken in

Sorry if these are overly common questions but I wanted to make sure that I didn't make a faux pas in my first for sale post and I didn't see this issues addressed in the stickies at the top of the page.

I hope to make my first post of items for sale tomorrow (incl. T. Pink, dunhill, p. stuart, brooks) and to making contributions to the general board as my sartorial knowledge continues to grow in the coming months.

Welcome!

1. I recommend watching both ebay and the selling forums both on here and over at Ask Andy About Clothes (another forum). You will start to get a good idea of what the market value would be for various items, and also remember that many of us here are knowledgeable enough to know when a price is fair.

2. The usual payment methods are Paypal and Google Checkout, with the later being more favorable (the lesser of two evils, mostly).

3. Search around for posts on taking measurements. This guide is generally the accepted method for taking measurements for jackets: How to Measure a Jacket

Also make sure to read the stickied threads on the top of the Buy/Sell forum for the other basics that you should know.

I would say the best way to get a price guide is to do a search. If you happen to be in possession of (say) a Brioni sportcoat in basically good condition, search the buy and sell forum for previous jackets, and make an educated guess at where yours fits vs the sale price of those ones. Check eBay for similar items as well. Failing that, start an interest check thread somewhere, ie 'here is my Brioni, what do you think it is worth'. Please use interest checks sparingly.... People here are understandably anal about measurement stuff, so do read up on it. From memory A Harris once wrote a pretty definitive guide on it. When in doubt, post pics showing your method. No one is going to get mad at you for too many pics. Please read the rules of the b&s forum. We are enforcing them more now than in the past, so people writing bumpity bump every morning are increasingly finding their threads lockity locked. I would say that the sellers who participate more actively in the SF community (rather than those who just use it as a storefront) tend to do better in terms of their sales as they get to be better known to the 'customer base' - ie the rest of us. Cases in point here include A Harris, Kent Wang, shoe, the good reverend Alan C and edmorel...so if you are a thrift junkie, ingratiating yourself to the boys over in the thrift shop bragging thread may be a good way to make yourself and your wares known. Happy selling, and any questions, feel free to post them here or to bug any of our respected Quality Sellers (snigger) with enquiries. Depending on how this thread evolves, I may end up pinning it as a guide for new sellers to the board.
