New type of ebay dishonesty?

Hi,

Has anyone experienced this type of ebay 'lie' before? Is this common?

I bought at auction a nice Armani 3 button 41L sportcoat for $12 at auction a few months ago. the dealer alexpattisaffordableelegance then told me that the jacket was no longer available immediately post auction and that they could not complete the transaction.

They actually claimed that they tried to pull the item off auction just prior to the end (presumably due to low price) but were unsuccessful.

So I filed a dispute with ebay/paypal. Eventually I dropped it - after much haranguing the dealer - they finally said that they had 'spilled coffee' on it while wrapping it and it was ruined.

Now, I see the same jacket available from (with identical measurements all around - on Armani Black Label 41L sportcoat with an unusual color pattern - light gray with ivory undertones) the same dealer with an initial bid price of $89.00.

Thoughts?
Do I have any recourse? other than calling them a liar?

thanks in advance

Did you leave negative feedback? If not, you should have. Other than that, just leave this alone. ebay doesn't care regardless.

What he said.
Here's another example where one would hope you would 'take one for the team' and leave negative feedback.

No I did not leave any feedback at all. I was naive enough to believe that this sort of thing might actually happen. Of course, now I wish I had and it's past the period where feedback is possible. If they had waited a while longer, I doubt I would have been able to look up the item description to see the exact measurements, etc.

They did change the title slightly so that a search for the exact title would not find the item.

as for taking one for the team, I've left negative feedback before, I'm not unwilling to do that.

Compared to Ebay, the old "thief's market" on Astor Place looks like an ethical, well-managed enterprise.

I've had another unusual ebay experience as well.

I bought an item (maybe $40 or $50) - it was never delivered. After much delay, the dealer said that it had been returned to them even though it had 'the correct address'.

They asked for a different address, so I gave them one. After much delay, I emailed the dealer whose response was: "not sure what happened, you have a right to be upset, we'll refund money immediately, if the pants come, just keep them and we'll give you a $25 credit in our ebay store for your trouble."

of course, the pants never came.

Has happened to me before on items that went before market value, but seller collected payment and never shipped item. Claimed item was sent, could not provide any details such as tracking number. Filed Paypal dispute, collected my money, and seller relisted item shortly after.

Don't feel too bad. $12 is a great price of course. But the Armani Black Label you won is very dated. The shoulders look like they belong on a football player, and the gorge is very low, a la late 1980s! The Armani Black Label you missed out on! The seller alexandpattisaffordableelegance seesms like a typical Ebay operation. They sell very dated items with absurd inflated MSRPs a lot of hype, and very high starting prices(for what they are selling). If the item doesn't sell, they just relist it till they find someone that doesn't know better. Oh yeah, they usually include "A bonus tie!", which is generally another dated item that they probably bought in a lot sale for pennies. They almost certainly get their items from Thrift Shops. Occasionally, I guess, they have auctions with low start prices like the one that you won. It seems that if the item goes for a low price, they will back out of the sale as they did to you. Pretty sleazy. There's really not much recourse for you, but I agree with Robin and Hard2fit. If you can still leave feedback for them I would leave truthful negative feedback for them. Say exactly what happened in your feedback. Of course they might retaliate against you with retaliatory negative feedback, but that's the glitch in the Ebay system. If you are solely an Ebay buyer, the negative will matter much more to them than to you.

Look at it this way - he saved you from spending $12 on that. And don't let Eric get his scissors on that precious Donald Trump tie!

thanks for the lengthy response

I was mostly interested in the jacket due to the low price, OTOH I believe that the picture shows the jacket at the worst possible angle.

BTW, how did you do the trick of having a URL show up as text "The Armani Black Labe you missed out on?

I bought a used but nearly mint double breasted Kiton suit off ebay at a great price...something like $150 bucks. The seller then emailed me and said "I'm very sorry, I just got it back from the cleaners and they ruined it, the lapels are all screwed up, you won't want the suit." I told him to ship it, and if I agreed it was ruined I would send it back. To his credit he sent the suit, and it was perfect, nothing wrong with the lapels.

This is very much against ebay policy. I woulld report it to trust & safety. If they were to recieve 3 or more complaints about this sort of thing the seller could have his account suspended.

I've never bothered shopping for clothing items or accessories on ebay. It just seems like too much of a hassle. If one is trying to get deals, many department stores have great sales, up to 40-50% off if one is willing to wait. Plus, you can try on the item and if there's a problem, it's really easy to rectify. Just my $0.02
