Why do people buy used shoes?

I've always wondered the same thing. I could never wear another person's used shoes. It's like wearing used underwear. No thanks.

Have you ever rented ski boots or bowling shoes?

I have to admit, bowling shoes really creep me out, spray or no spray. And I just can't do used shoes.

Thank goodness they (we) do or I would be up a creek. I have no problem buying lightly worn shoes.

Well, personally I have not purchased any used shoes, but I can certainly understand why some people do. The value diminishes rapidly once the sole meets road.

The same question goes for why people buy used cars or watches...I have friends who would rather buy an inexpensive new car than buy a used car. And I also have friends who only buy 1-2 year old used car exclusively.

I think that buying used pants is often worse than used shoes... the stains... eww

I guess it's a sliding scale. How many times have the shoes/pants been tried on by others instore? Have they been taken home and worn around the house by someone and returned 3 weeks later? Buying used isn't preferable, but I don't get too precious about it.

This is very true. But for me, with shoes, the line is when a foot impression forms. If the shoes have shopwear, or have been tried on a lot, that's OK. I don't even mind some wear on the bottom of the soles. But once the footbed has molded to someone else's foot, that just doesn't seem comfortable, or particularly good for you.

Also, once the interior of the shoe looks dirty, I don't want it.

i too found it odd. Then I found some amazing shoes from Maxwell from when they were on dover st. I picked them up. They were used but a few times. It was as much for interest as for wearing.

I have also purchased a pair for a costume party - needed some 70s platforms and couldn't find them new. Some others at the party had rented their outfits (including this young lady in a short short skirt and white bublegum boots). I typically donate these one-time shoes after the single use. The ones I buy have been used a lot less than any rentals I could find. Also less use than ice skates at the rink.

I typically put about a 1/4 cup of alcohol in them and slosh it around a few times. Sometimes, I put a piece of plastic at the opening so that it doesn't evap too quickly.
