I have had Eureka for over 13 years and I am waiting, albeit hopelessly, for it to die.
I would decide first; weather you need vacuum designed for carpets or hardwood floors.
They are not the same and don't come with the same attachments.

I purchased the Dyson dc-15 "the ball" & love it. I haven't had a problem w/it & if I purchased another vac I'd buy the same thing all over again. I think that's the best endorsement I can give.
There is a voyeuristic cool factor in scoping out the contents of the clear container to see all the garbage & gunk you vacuum up I have to admit.
Not having to pay for bags is something I appreciate.
They're coming out w/a new vac next month you might want to check out. It's similar to the dc-15 only 5 lbs. lighter, appar. 1/3 smaller & just as maneuverable.
My brother has a Meile cannister which he likes, I would still buy the Dyson again no prob.

I have a Miele Blue Moon which has been fantastic but I tried a neighbors Dyson and it picked up more dirt.

Thanks for the tip One thing to note about the Dyson cannisters is that they're a lot smaller than the Oreck's, so they fill up faster and may make it seem like you're picking up more dirt. I think it depends on preference though-- I personally like bags as opposed to bagless b/c I feel like the dirt stays more contained in the bags and doesn't fly back into the air when I dump it out...

I live in a small city apartment so my DC18 Dyson Slim is perfect. Works great and stores in my closet without taking up too much valuable storage space.

Meile canister. I have the one that preceded the "White Pearl". I bought it at least 15 years ago as a close-out model; I got the vacuum, hepa filter, top of the line powerhead and a couple of boxes of bags thrown in for $799.00 at Whole Earth Access in Berkley. Whole Earth Access is long gone, but my Meile still works great!

For those with allergies, the Rexair is a very good choice ( ours is over 30 years old).Never had any problems with it (unlike our Kirby)

Go to a vacuum cleaner repair store and buy a refurbished commercial upright vacuum. Almost all the stuff marketed to the home market is crap.

I bought an Oreck in 1993. It has been taken to the local Oreck dealer two times for a "tune-up," I believe for around $25-30 each time. It still works as well as when we first got it.

That's great it has lasted you so long. The XL ultra actually comes with 10 free tune ups and a 10 year warranty. Makes me feel a lot better that it's covered if something goes wrong...

Nature abhors them. As do cats.

We have a Miele Capricorn.

It replaced our top of the line Kenmore. The Miele picks up a lot more dirt than the Kenmore did.

We like it.

Wouldn't mind a Miele if I could afford one. Picked up an Electrolux Harmony to pick up the loose debris in my apartment (note: epoxy floors, not carpet). Why? They're deadly silent (if you don't use the power head). Can have one cranked up full blast and still have a cellphone conversation without yelling. Also, they've got a HEPA filter. Old vacs without HEPA filters suck.. and blow out a good chunk of what they allegedly 'vacuum'. That's a good enough reason to upgrade.

Do you mean your cat doesn't like when you vacuum? My dog HATES when I do... she attacks it, haha.
