Vacuum advice

Anyone out there have a vacuum that they recommend? After I used my old one to try to get up all the leftover pine needles from my tree (to no avail) I realized I probably needed a new one. I've been checking out the Oreck Xl, and it looks pretty good-- only weighs about 9 ibs which is nice. Thoughts?

Miele

Miele, Dyson - though I have to admit that the longest running vacuum we've owned was a GE cyclone (which is a Dyson licensed design) from Walmart for $100. We've had it for 6 years now. YMMV

Hmm, I haven't heard of the Miele. I would really like to get a vacuum with a bag and not a canister, which is another reason why the Orecks are appealing. Apparently, the dust and dirt you vacuum up can be redistributed when you empty the canister- YUCK!

We have a Kirby, and it works about as well as a vacuum can.

miele
they call their machines canister or cylinder style to represent the shape but they actually have a bag and hepa filters
best vacuum i've purchased

I hear the Miele replacement bags are pricey, so avoid a Miele if you're too cheap to buy the bags. I have a cheapo Bissell bagless vacuum (with HEPA filter)... I was leery of bagless at first but now I'm hooked. It's easy to empty the canister into a trash bag and then you can wash it in the sink. It does have a few filters which need to be cleaned periodically (which is not too hard).

I say Dyson. Good suction, no bag.

I tell you the Hoover Dyson clones are a great vac for the price.

I had a dream two nights ago where I was purchasing an Oreck.

Over the last 25 years I have always bought one of the Consumer Reports "Best Buys" and have been very happy. I think each one has lasted 10 years or so and has been pretty affordable. I would check with them to see what their latest recommendation is.

Seconded on the Consumer Reports comments. I bought their "best buy" three years ago, and it's still humming along quite well. I think I paid in the range of $70 for it. I don't see the point of investing hundreds or thousands in a fancy vacuum cleaner, as long as it does the job with some degree of competency.

+89237429 Miele is an all around great company. Nobody can compete with German mechanical engineering. I have the entry level vac in lemon yellow and they are as light as they are stylish. I was weary about a cannister as well, but they are better all around. The reason I originally got one was because someone my girlfriend was living with was allergic to our cat and we wanted something that wouldn't leak dander into the air. Mieles are one of the few that are approved for hospital use. The thing with Dyson is that they both leak dust and hurt your carpet. Part of the reason the Dysons seem to collect so much stuff is due to their stiff bristles which actually extract carpet fiber. The key is air flow and Miele certainly has that, which you can adjust in numerous ways. The bags are not super expensive, but they are statically charged so they don't leak dust and there is also an additional filter at the exhaust. There is also a bypass motor where objects will not come close to the motor, so it is less likely to break. Miele is family owned and operated since around WW2 I think, and their appliances are there to last. Get a Miele, there should be a reseller in your nearest city.

Thanks for all the great advice. There is so much to take into consideration when buying a new vacuum! It is always good to have the opinions of other consumers/users. I think that I would definitely need to try the vacuum before I purchased it to make sure that I was making the right decision. The Oreck stores will let you try out their vacuums and I think they'll even let you try a Dyson too and you get a free gift even if you don't buy their vacuum. I think doing a test drive will be very helpful!

I was researching vacuum cleaners last year. The top rated vacuum at consumer reports was a Kenmore, and the best value cleaner was the Eureka Boss.
