I know that everyone likes to look for complex solutions, the particular combinations of foods, herbal remedies, and creams that rectify this. I'm not arguing that these don't help. However, the popular wisdom that dark circles are related to sleeplessness seem to hold true in many cases. For male's in their mid-twenties, in particular, there is a great deal of pressure to make it in life and to work as hard as you can to find the right path. Also, how do you go out partying on the weekends? This seemingly innocent part of life, staying up till one or later on Friday or Saturday, apparently has a deep effect on sleep patterns.

A large portion of the population does not get enough sleep.

Four years ago I developed chronic dark circles and they've never gone away. I've tried various things but nothing's ever really helped. It looks worse under certain lightings than others, but it's far from perfect. Looks worse when I have a light below head level, probably because all the imperfections case little shadows.

Anything else I can use? I used to pride myself on looking younger than I really am (even if that's not the best when you're in your early 20s), and now my eyes look way more aged than they should look at 26.

Oh boy - I can sympathise with this situation - most annoying especially when folks look at you and say "you look tired" when you're not. It is more likely hereditary. But it can also be a symptom of diet and may not have to do with "fatty foods" - you may also wish to look into a possibility of a food allergy, which seems to be so commonplace these days... A large percentage of the population also has a lactose intolerance, including soft cheese, ice cream, milk of course and the like. This can cause bloating and water retention in certain individuals [sounds like pms but not !] Another commonly undiagnosed condition is Celiac [gluten intolerance] and if this goes unchecked, can cause real health issues.
Check into the symptoms of these and see if changing your food group helps at all.
If you are fine and it's just hereditary - well then, surgery is imminent... It certainly is for me [nearing 50 but would look 32 if no f'n bags under the eyes] BTW - stay out of the sun - this will contribute to the problem also.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think it's my diet, however. Over the past four years my diet has gone through some changes, but has generally been quite healthy, as well as fairly dairy-free. I'm guessing the dark circles are probably hereditery, although it's the other imperfections around my eyes that have been bothering me recently. The past few days I've been cutting way down on all the topicals, so we'll see. btw, while I've tried the cold cucumbers thing many times which didn't do anything, I've tried using cold potato slices a few times recently and was really surprised how well it sometimes works, albeit quite temporarily. I looked in the mirror and was pretty astonished - I looked five years younger! Didn't last very long.

I think most of the good advice for this topic has been said, but here's my list of ways to reduce bags;

  • Lots of fluids
  • A good diet (zinc etc)
  • A decent skin care regime
  • An ice pack face mask to cool the skin
  • I heard cucumbers can work for this too
  • Topical creams etc
  • Get more rest/sleep

I've had slight bags under the old eyes for a few years and I agree that it can be hereditary, since my old man has them too, but you can reduce the visual appearance quite well using some/all of the above methods.
