Evening Lads! A quandary for you.

I am in the process of refining two different outfits that I wear to/at work, at the gym, and on the commute back home. I am interested in the interactional nature of the different outfits and how I can streamline/improve them.

Context: My dress code is smart casual. I would more than comfortable to identify myself as post-well-dressed if that’s a term. Before I entered the world of work was well-dressed, because I didn’t have codes, and restrictions. I also didn’t have to work long hours and have to be up and out of the house early. Before, I could enjoy carouseling through the sartorial canon, where X here, and Y there. But I no longer have that luxury and must establish a uniform, of sorts.

This post may bore you… but here’s hoping, like me, you are interested in details, and here’s hoping you can help me.

6 months ago, I started my job wearing a broken suit (sans tie) with loafers. 5 months ago, I decided to leave my loafers at work and commute in some Stan Smiths. I quite liked the contrast of wearing trainers with a (broken suit). 3 months ago, I start regularly going to the gym (at work) and, thus felt vindicated at commuting in trainers, as I could begin to blend two different outfits. This change in routine meant that I would return home still in my gym attire - the aforementioned Stan Smiths, white socks, Adidas shorts (I'd describe the colour as asphalt), a plain Black/Navy T, a North Face or Berghaus fleece along with a North Face coat.

The North Face coat was an interesting proposition as I eventually decided that if I wore it on the commute in the morning I could then wear it later and even sometimes around work. Once again, I must add that I am fascinated by the interactional nature of different items.

Next, I decided to eschew the navy blazer from the broken suit: deciding that the Northie could be worn on the commute to work, sometimes at work, and then on the commute home on top of both my work outfit (grey trousers, blue oxford shirt etc.) and the the gym outfit (asphalt shorts, fleece etc.)

I cannot help but feel that I am getting sloppier by the day. As I say, I would describe myself as post-well-dressed. I feel like this routine needs tweaking, that I am missing a detail.

Talking Points
· One thing that I failed to mention is that I’ve also began using a backpack for the first time in my life. I see this as part of the sloppiness. How do you think this interacts with the two outfits that I have mentioned?
· The Stan Smiths and grey trousers don’t combine that well. Would a certain style of trouser look better both with trainers (on the commute) and with loafers? Or would a certain type of trainer look better both with trainers and at the gym? I’m certainly not a sneakerhead so any recommendations would be appreciated.
· Whilst I like wearing The North Face jacket with the gym outfit, The North Face jacket actually looks boxy when worn with trousers, and perhaps even sloppy when worn with trousers and trainers. Would some kind of puffa jacket look better with both outfits?

I’m a long-time reader of these hallowed forums and can see that you are perceptive and well-informed bunch, so I look forward to interacting with you.
