What to look for in a pair of undershorts?

How should one select a pair of undershorts?  I've been considering boxer briefs for a while, but I think they might be a bit too 'hip', and not traditional enough.  I don't like the fit of boxers, and European-style bikini briefs are uncomfortable, so I would guess that traditional briefs are the only option?  Are there specific brands that are recommended?  Is colored underwear considered effete?  And what is the consensus on wearing them with pajamas?  Is this considered proper?

From my own over the years boxer short experimentation I've settled on two easily obtainable brands I like: RL Polo and Banana Republic. Both can be had cheap at either TJ Maxx or on seasonal sale. I like them better than Brooks Brothers. They're cut better particularly with fly overlap. I could see the usefulness of boxer briefs with more closely cut jeans or trousers. I claim no experience with the higher end stuff like Zimmerli.

I think the only consideration here should be comfort. if you don't know what will be most comfortable, get 3 or 4 different types, wear them for a week or two, chose the most comfortable and stock up on those. I wear boxers, and all my underwear for years has been from the same manufacturer. it makes life simple, and keeps my crotch happy.

I prefer the mercerized cotton of either BB or Neiman Marcus' briefs. They are a fuller-styled brief without bikini-like sides. Jeff

I once heard someone say (in a very authoritative tone) that it is generally considered "improper for a gentleman to wear underwear with his pajamas," but that if he feels that he absolutely must have the support, he should do so only with cotton pajamas, and "never silk". That just seems outright ridiculous to me -- I can't imagine the reasoning for this. Has anyone ever heard such a thing?

I've never heard of any rule about whether to wear underwear with pajamas. I agree that such a rule would be ridiculous. The only rational "rule" that I can think of is that you wouldn't need to wash the pajamas as often if you wear underwear underneath.

I need to ask first if you all allow women to post on your little threads. Because I've got oodles of opinions on the undershorts issues, but I don't want to waste my time posting them if you're all going to look at me with disdain due to my gender.

No by all means, I'd love to hear a woman's opinion on this issue. Please.

Oh good. Because, as I said, I'm all kinds of opinionated on the subject. Let's just go with one point at a time. I say that Boxer Briefs are a generally safe way to go. I find them to be endlessly sexy. It wasn't until I was watching an old re-run of Will & Grace, however, that I learned that some people consider them to be the homosexual's choice of undergarment. I've seen one too many straight men look sexy in them to pay too much mind to that, though.

As a female, let me just say that I am all for boxer briefs. They have the most flattering fit both underneath clothing, and alone. And colors are nice too. There are so many men out there that are afraid of a little color, and I just want to tell them to embrace it. As for wearing underwear with pajamas, I would say it's a personal choice. Do you wish to wear underwear or would you rather not?

As a straight guy boxer brief wearer (with the occasional knit boxer,) thanks. My fiancee seems to like them too, so I'll put my vote there too. Hmm, it seems like we have some women on the board at last (except for you. Jill, we all know you're watching us tpp.)

The real question, I think, regarding night time wear...is not in the underwear...but...in the footwear. Thoughts on slippers, everyone?

In the winter, I wear fleece lined suede moccasins that a female friend gave me as a gift (thanks Ang.) Very comfortable. I don't wear them to bed - but they've been keeping my toes warm while I cheered on the Sox the last couple of nights. Arwen - why is footwear important to women? I had assumed that as long as we weren't in grandpa slippers or bunny ones, you would be fine with it.

I'm a boxer brief wearer most of the time, but I also like 2(x)ist briefs when wearing certain trousers as I've got thick thighs and boxer briefs tend to show an outline with slimmer cuts. As to the second question - I would find underwear and pajamas much too much to wear for sleeping. I'd be a tangled mess of cloth in the morning. I prefer nothing at all and so does my other half

I don't care as much about footwear as I do about the condition of the feet once the footwear has been removed. I'd say that socks in bed are a NO go. But...sweaty feet because you just took them out of your nasty old slippers are probably worse.
