What is the forums general view on wearing a shell Indy or tanker (with a commando sole) in the rain and snow. I know they are expensive boots but should they be worn in ****** weather or only as fair weather items? I would love a pair but for that price would really want them to be used in all circumstances not just for show.

I occasionally spray my shell indys with leather defender and dont let the weather get to me, but I have either commando sole or a topy on my pairs. If they were just leather sole, I'd be more mindful of the weather

It really comes down to personal preference and how much you like to "baby" your things. With a commando sole you can wear in rain (and I guess snow as well if you really had to). If it's snowing I'd rather just wear an actual snow boot and leave the Indys at home so I don't get salt everywhere.

Yep, it's a personal preference as to whether you baby your items. I have no qualms about wearing my shell boots in crappy weather. Snow, rain, salt.. doesn't matter. I think shell cordovan was built to be indestructible. I wipe them down with a clean wet bar towel after each wearing. I accept that they will form welts, and once the bad weather is over, I will do my best to bring them back in shape. If you care about keeping them pristine, then you should go with a work boot like those great Kudu indy boots.

Oh... and I tried Leather Defender a few times, and I still got welts. Maybe I need to be more liberal with it.

example of welts from bad weather ??

One person on here posted his cigar Indys that he wore in a day of rain and mud. They were covered and he left them covered in mud for days. Then when he cleaned them off they looked
brand new.

You'd think leather from a horse could handle an explosion.

Hey thanks man! I appreciate the tip.

The Horween crew is on it! John from Horween reached out with the same answer as Nick, though he also noted "Less is more" when it comes to application. (I post that for posterity and future searches as much as anything)

Recently snagged these from my local Goodwill for $20. A little snug at the ball of my foot, but couldn't pass em up for such a good price.
