Yes, initial setup is expensive; I spent around $2000 for my bike, seat, pedals, and cleats. That's not including helmet, riding clothes, gloves, and other misc. accessories. As well my bike is nowhere near top-of-the-line.

Because if everyone in said group is properly equipped, it is a bike club we're talking about. If most do, then biking must be a common hobby; not a chance the OP would have raised the same question...

And yeah, we got it. You like expensive toys: cars, watches, bikes, whatever.

I spent about half that much. It's a little disheartening how near the bottom of the line I had to shop with $1000 or so. Still, my bike should easily last me until I have the means to buy a better quality one.
