Before hemming a new jean ...

should I wash it or just take it to the tailor?

soak it first... then see where it sits and then take it to get hemmed if necessary. Depending on the denim they can shrink 2-3"

Speaking from (bad) experience I would highly suggest soaking them first as well as still leaving them ½ inch longer for creases. Short jeans are never a good thing.

Soak, then dry. Most of the shrinkage comes from the heat of the dryer. So, if you want to get it out of the way, you must dry it before doing any alteration.

You only have to soak them if the denim is unsanforized.
99.9% of jeans are sanforized and therefore don't require any sort of soaking/washing before a wear.

especially no drying to get shrinkage out of the way that is already supposed to be minimal.

Sometimes sanforized denim may lose a quarter inch or something but its nothing you can't tug back while wet

question from denim-ignoramus: How can you tell whether or not jeans are sanforized? Does anyone know if APC is sanforized? Thanks

There might be a label on the inside stating that it's sanforized. Most denim companies do not do this, however. APC raw jeans aren't, but maybe some of the colored jeans are. When in doubt, wash first (I learned this the hard way).

Nearly all western brands are sanforized, with only a handful of exceptions (Levis Vintage Collection and Levis Shrink-to-fit are the only ones that come to mind). So yeah, APC, Nudie, 5EP, Acne, Kicking Mule... they are all sanforized.

Japanese brands on the other hand are unsanforized for the most part, though there are a few brands that are unsanforized (certain Evisu and Somet come to mind, I'm sure there are others) and many of them are available in one wash (most 45rpm, some Skull, some Eternal, etc...).

Yeah, at most an inch is lost in the inseam, shrinking elsewhere is next to nothing.

OK, This is what I've done with my new jeans based on tips from others: 1. soak the jeans in a warm water for few hours. 2. dry the jeans naturally in a room temperature until they are almost dried. 3. Put the jeans in a drier for 20min in a gentle cycle for maximum shrinkage. (I put the jeans into the drier this morning). I am going to go home tonight and check out the result.

Your jeans will be all wrinkled up. You should've just waited and take the jeans out of the dryer immediately after it's done. But if you're into wrinkled jeans, then...

There was a guy at my tailor with APCs that he wore and then washed to shrink before getting tapered. He said they had definitely shrunk and thats why he waited to do that. Of course I don't really understand how one walks around with really long jeans for so long but hey that's just me.

I found that one item in the drier does not wrinkle the item that much. If there are many clothes in the drier then you're right and I have to iron the jeans ..
