Read the other post. Edit: The difference between gaining and maintaining is a matter of how much not what.

Hey you guys seem pretty smart. What kind of food should I eat if I dont have much money.Right now Im in job corps and they give me free meals at the center where I live but when I graduate Im going to be on my own. I was thinking like potatos are cheap and I like baked potato. and cereal is good. peanut butter jelly?

pasta and chicken breasts are a good start

Canned tuna
Frozen chicken breast
Eggs
Oatmeal
Frozen vegetables...

I mean come on man, it's not that hard. Either go get a COSTCO card and buy in bulk, or just shop around. You MAY have to go to more than one supermarket.

I am shocked at how much tuna is. It's 1.70 - 2.00 a can around here "white" as opposed to "light" tuna. I think frozen chicken is probably cheaper.

Recently I have learned how to make greek yogurt at home. So instead of paying $2 for 7oz I pay 3.18 for a gallon of milk and net about half a gallon of yogurt. Profit!

these are good.

i'd add peanut butter, whole wheat pasta, mozzarella, milk. tuna. canned salmon.

eggs as a near-perfect food can not be overstated.

You know, not all college food is bad. You could give it a try the first semester.

Also, please don't say healthful. Only Rachel Ray says that.

bananas

fresh vegetables in season are dirt cheap

fruits, lots of fruits.

Chicken breast maybe healthier but other cuts of chicken are more flavorful and cheaper. In my college years, eggs and tuna were my protein staple.

Just a few more to add in since after looking into da fridge:

Greek Yogurt (0%) - I cannot stress how awesome this stuff is. Lactose free, 22g protein per 1/2 cup, only 6g carbs. No fat.
Light Muenster
Turkey bacon
Cottage cheese

Don't be too stingy, splurge on atleast SOMETHING a little pricier (be it a nice cut of top sirloin or some wild Alaskan salmon).

Yogurt and granola
