Anyone else joining a gym this January? Talk to me.

I'm from DC but I thought I'd share that the Philly Sports Club AND Washington Sports Club is offering the sign up fee at $20.08 (2008) - which is a great discount. Anyone in that area taken them up? Whats your experience with the gym been like?

Thanks!

I had planned too, but well, it hasnt happened yet

I think the thing to point out is that most gyms make their money from the people who sign up and stop going so make sure you're not one of them Plan out time in your schedule to go to the gym and don't make excuses not to.

I love the new years rush to sign up, the gym dwindles down in the next few months, and us regulars are back to a less crowded gym. though it would be nice to see more people working out

Personally, I think there are too many people "working out." I'd rather see people working hard.

I'd settle for "putting out", though "bugging out" is pretty fun too.

Better yet: both at the same time.

I've found that training on grass is much tougher on your legs and gives you a much better workout than on a treadmil. Although yes if you are planning on doing lots of weights this is the best and safest option.

Amen. I don't mind waiting for a piece of equipment if you're working hard, but when you're doing quarter squats with 135 and wandering around for 5 minutes between sets...I get a little frustrated.

5 minutes? Good God. Personally I don't wander away from the machine unless I'm getting some water. If you are on the other side of the gym, I'm going to assume that you aren't using the machine.

Geez I hate noobs at the gym this time of year. My gym is tiny so the influx of resolutioners has a significant and negative impact. The worst is people that will rest on the machine. I only rest for >30 seconds yet I still get up and move around a bit.

Keep it moving people!

What difference does it actually make? For you, and for them?

+1

As well, this is why I try to go the gym at 8 at night, when practically no one is there.

soulpatcher, i do not have any experience with either but a friend of mine who did research gyms in the foggy bottom area went with LA Sports Club which is the gym of the Ritz. She said in the end for her it was a much better deal because it had more equipment and the facilities were better. Also, all of their classes are free for members. I dont have the price but maybe they are running a special too.

Hope this information helps and good luck.

From a simple caloric standpoint, you'll burn more doing something active between sets, be that walking around or situps/crunches. Some people just enjoy being constantly on the move - I like to call it "dynamic resting"

During 1RM or 5x5 / low rep heavy sets days, it's actually recommended to take your sweet time between sets; in which case, do NOT just sit/stand still and breathe, which makes you look like a bum IMHO.
