Shoulder to Shoulder and Pit to Pit Measurement Question

If a sports coat has a 19.3" shoulder-to-shoulder measurement and a 23.2" pit-to-pit measurement, can it be altered to fit me or is it possible that it may fit me unaltered even though my measurements are 20"- 21" shoulder-to-shoulder measurement and a 22"- 23" pit-to-pit?

What is the range- high and low- I should stick to when shopping for sports coat's online using the two measurements listed above? I like my suits to fit well, with as little bagginess as possible, but not extra-slim or tight- for lack of a better term a contoured classic look, but definitely not the trendy super slim cuts I see on some suits.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

How do you figure that your 20-21" shoulders will fit into a 19.3" jacket? No, of course it won't work. And it work won't or your chest, either. The pit-to-pit measurement is on the outside of the jacket, and doesn't account for the thickness of the fabric or the internal room necessary for you to move or breathe. As for alterations, that depends on how much extra material is in the jacket, but it's not cheap---you're messing with the entire essence of the jacket, and the result may not look great. Why not just take that money and time and energy buy a jacket that actually fits you?

Shoulder measurements can be tricky to gauge because the cut of the shoulder will vary from maker to maker. My shoulders are roughly 19.25" and I have a jacket that was listed at 18.5" and the shoulders fit great. If your shoulders are closer to 21", then I would guess the 19.3" won't work...I usually go with +-.5".

The chest is another story. If your true chest measurement is 23.2", you don't want a 23" jacket....you want +2-3".
