comparing American Crew hair products. mostly interested in fiber/forming cream/matte

I'm looking for a new hair product and they're too expensive to just go out and buy them all. I currently have the American Crew Fiber and the Garnier Fructis matte clay (the cylindrical jar with the red top).

I'm looking for something kinda inbetween them. I sometimes really like the AC Fiber, but it's a little too difficult/thick to apply sometimes and can leave areas of my hair feeling a little too stiff/gunky. The descriptions of the other American Crew products aren't too helpful. High hold? Strong hold? Ultimate hold? What the hell does any of that mean? I'm mostly interested in the Forming Cream and the Matte. How does the hold of those compare to the Fiber? And is the Forming Cream very shiny? I'd be okay with some subtle shine, but nothing too much. Anyone?

Hold describes how well your hair will stay in place once you apply the product. The Matte will be close to the Fiber in composition, and the Forming Cream will be about the same strength wise, but will add more shine to your hair.

You might want to give their citrus mint clay stuff a try - it will give a nice hold, without the stiffness or shine and it's a bit easier to work with. Their citrus mint finishing cream was also nice to work with, but it has a low hold compared to the others and will give a more natural look.

If you can find it though, I recommend getting a jar of Play Clay from Altobella instead of American Crew's stuff. The products lasts for months from a small jar, and is much easier on your scalp and hair.

Thanks. Are all the altobella products better for your hair and scalp or just the Play Clay, and what makes them better? I ask because they have a product called Wild Matte that looks like it might be better suited for what I want.

No idea on their other products. I tried it out at the recommendation of my hair stylist/cutter person and have been very happy with it. Previously I was only using American Crew, but I was having numerous problems with their stuff: scratchy scalp, thinning hair, pain to wash out, acne around my hair lines, etc.
