best cheap&healthful weight gaining foods?

Hello.( I did a quick search and will give HDT Pro Blend a try, and am still going through the other related threads) But as for food, my main issue is cost. Im wondering whats the best cheapest food or snacks to stock up on that I can munch on several times a day to gain weight? Instead of gaining the freshmen 15, after one semester away from home I lost 11 lbs, which scared the crap out of me, and I don't want to get any skinnier. (Now 6'3", 160 lbs). But this is mainly due to leaving working in a restaurant where Id munch on fattening foods nonstop, to eating 2 or 3 small meals a day. Thanks for any suggestions

Hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, nuts, peanut butter (a godsend), bananas, and protein powder. That's a pretty good starter. Canned tuna too, but I much prefer wild salmon in cans to minimize mercury ingestion. And the ultimate cheap protein source, milk. If you find some extra cash in your wallet, try finding some greek yogurt at Trader Joes. Fage is the brand name. It's a bit pricey, but mixed up with protein powder, it is brilliant.

The best thing you can probably do is get another job at a restaurant. I worked as a cook and night manager at a couple restaurants in college, and I am now amazed at how much money I was saving on food. When I got my first "real" job, I shrunk down and even got a little fatter because I wasn't running around a kitchen all day anymore.

Other than that, canned salmon, canned tuna, canned sardines, canned pumpkin, millions of eggs, generic frozen vegetables. Sometimes Meijer will have buy-one-get-one on bags of frozen chicken, and that's when you should buy everything they've got. You'll be good for a couple months. Good starches like pumpkin and sweet potatoes keep you satiated and help to keep weight up, too.

Pasta, cottage cheese, peanuts, frozen veggies.

if i were on an incredibly strict budget, this is what i would eat:

-chicken
-misc spices
-veggie mix of broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots
eggs
-oats
-milk

of course, this is considering an extreme budget and simplicity. same food for gaining muscle or losing fat, only difference is the amount of each eaten.

This is an awful list for the aforementioned purpose. The only way to gain much weight on this oh-so-clean diet is to eat every item in absurd quantities; a surefire way to make newbies NOT wanting to touch any of these foods ever afterward. So much for trying to be healthy

The real answer is trail mixes, organic granolas, or easily digestable liquid-based stuff (milk in all its varieties, protein drinks / Muscle Milk if you work out).

Re: health food, I like ken's suggestion of canned sardine. That and canned mackerel(mmhhhm...) are probably among the more underrated cheap fares out there.

I don't know what your definition of "cheap food" is, but I swear by a protein drink called Whey Delicious. It has very few ingredients, none of which are hard-to-pronounce chemical compounds. And here's the kicker: It tastes good. I drink it with juice and with water, and I mix it into yogurt and breakfast cereals.

It's selling online now for $39 a jug, but if you can find a local distributor you can probably get it for $35 or even $30.

Here's their FAQ page: http://www.proteinishealthy.com/inde...d=13&Itemid=43

You won't really gain weight on Whey protein shakes. You need more calorie dense foods. Nuts and natural peanutbutter is always good for that. For your meals, instead of eating leaner meats such as chicken/turkey/fish go for a red meat. Ground beef is very cheap and great for bulking on.

I guess, if you're really dedicated to gaining lots of weight, you could opt for a weight gainer shake. Here's a solid 2200 calorie shake:

Weight-gain mixes are (usually) not exactly "healthful" (per the thread title). Tons of sugar and some protein... you can get that by having a protein shake and then drinking a couple Cokes, and it'd probably be cheaper!
