NYC, Suit under $2,000, Made in Italy, Generous Lapel?

Hello gentlemen,

First post here. Long time reader!

I love SuitSupply for my daily workhorse suits.

I'm looking specifically for Made in Italy suggestions in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, both RTW and MTM.

RTW - problem here is I prefer larger lapels. SuitSupply seems to have the widths about right for me. 99% of RTW suits I see have very average lapels. Open to any suggestions !

MTM - I have found Patrick Johnson Tailors, their enry level line starts at $1,300, manufactured in Italy (Rome I believe). Nothing against them, and do fully plan to give them a try. But are they really the only game in town? Seems strange to have to use an Australian company, in NYC, to get a Made in Italy suit! Every other MTM I've researched seems to be made in the USA or China.

Any reason why the suit must be made in Italy? I'd think that you would have much more success by having a suit made in the U.S. with Italian fabric.

I’m certainly not limiting myself to “made in Italy” suits. I have, and will continue to buy suits made outside Italy.

But I posted because finding good suits made IN Italy (that fit my lapel and price criteria) is where I’m a bit lost, where I feel I must be missing something.

Also, I’m of Italian descent and an Italophile, and appreciate many different types of products made in Italy. With suits, specifically, Italy has a legendary history and a great supply of tailoring talent. I’m not embarrassed to seek the prestige of wearing a suit made in Italy. It doesn’t supersede the importance of cut, fit, construction, fabric and value, but it certainly adds to it.

If Patrick Johnson can contract with factories in Rome and Naples, and offer MTM suits in NYC at great prices, surely there must be others I am missing that are doing the same?

To be even more specific, does anyone know of an Italian company (based in Italy with a NYC location), that makes suits in Italian factories (whether they own them or contract them)? Either RTW (with nice lapels) or MTM? Preferably under $1,500 RTW or under $2,000 MTM.

Any thoughts on Canali or Corneliani "made to measure" VS Patrick Johnson?

Are you looking specifically for Italian make, or just styling? The Italian look comes down to the little details, and the fit, more than anything else.

I'd say American mtm would be your best shot at that price point.

Sure, there is nothing wrong with wanting something Italian made. I was just thinking you might have more options if you chose Italian fabrics but made somewhere else. Obviously you've thought of that, so...

I was going to mention Corneliani if you wanted an Italian made suit. I've had a Corneliani suit and several other garments made by them. I like them very much, and their lapels are a decent size. I only have trousers from Canali but they are very nice too. I think you would get a very good product going with either of those. Of course, you are paying a premium for those names, and you'll have to live with that. I don't know if either of those companies have locations in the U.S. but they are widely available at places like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Caruso? Last time I saw them in stores (1 year ago), they have quite nice Tom Ford-like lapels.

If you're in NYC, Email the guys at No Man Walks Alone and make an appointment to try on their Sartoria Formosa and Eidos Napoli stuff. Alternatively I'd check out Ring Jacket at The Armoury -- though it's made in Japan, it's more Italian than a lot of italian brands.

I don't know Patrick Johnson (I deal mostly in Italian myself), but I can vouch for the quality of both Canali and Corneliani for MTM. That said, it may get a bit out of your 2K price range, and quickly.

Any sources for Caruso (at some discount) would be great especially !

Will also report back on my experience if I order from Patrick Johnson, which is likely.

You may find some sale Caruso at Bloomingdales, and C21 by WTC has Canali and Corneliani

Right now, I am in a Hickey Freeman MTM phase - but before that I was buying Mabro suits almost exclusively.

I thought that they were quite good and compared favorably to Canali - but my understanding is that Mabro is a small operation and supply can be hard to find.

rajesh06, do you recall the last place you found Mabro suits? I had heard of them but also have the impression they are very hard to find in the U.S.

If you don't mind going online, and maybe these were already mentioned...ShopTheFinest, Sartoriale and Yoox.
Again, all online for you, so check out the return policies first; Yoox, if I can recall, has one of the best.

If you can catch a sale a Barneys, you may find something...they do it rather frequently and have two big ones every year (Boglioli, Canali, Belvest Sartorio, etc. and real big on Isaia - although lapels may not be exactly what you're looking for).
