Is there a filenes in nyc? - Page 2

Whenever I walk into the discount stores on 6th Ave in NYC. I get disgusted and walk out. Filenes t J Maxx Burlington coat factory. The merchandise always looks so unsavory. Like it's been pawed over one time to many.

Uhh, I'd buy all of those and sell them on Ebay for $400 a piece.  You're guaranteed to sell them at that price IMO.
Actually, and this is a puzzle, 2-3 weeks ago they were $699.99 and take another 75% off. I then bought two (size 40-they run big) for $175 each. I have never seen anything go up in price at Filene's before. Now that I am spoiled, I may wait to see if they go back down again.

Hey, any Borrelli's left in 38R at a low price? To get back on topic, I was mall shopping in northern NJ once and saw a Filene's Basement. I got all excited since I've heard all the stories of great finds here, but when I went it the merchandise sucked . Maybe it's just a location-dependent thing.

I've seen on several occassions prices go up -- sometimes they have blowout sales where the items are marked down a larger percentage for just a day or two. For example, the Borrelli suit I bought for HRHAndrew (that he subsequently tried to sell on Ebay) was $650 during the June "Blowout sale." This was the same sale where an Attolini Sartoria navy blue suit in 44R was $450 (still kicking myself for not buying to resell it). It is location dependant by the way -- about half of the basement's are a step up from Marshall's at best. Currently in Newton there are Brioni sport coats for $450 - $650. I'm expecting them to get down to under $400, at which point I will buy to resell. If anyone sees Bergdorff stuff come into the DC store in the near future, I'd be interested in buying a St. Andrews or Cantarelli if they have them in.

As of last Sunday there were three at the Atlanta Filene's-marked size 48 (Euro measure)-an extra 60% off the $699.99 sale price. Do not know if they take phone orders.

I prefer the Filenes Basement on the UWS, it gets fewer shoppers than the store on the Ladies Mile which means the selections aren't as picked over. I always say it's worth a stop because if you get there when they have a new shipment, you can really score (I once found a pair of Theory pants for $19.99). The problem with the store on the Ladies Mile is that it is in the midst of Discount Alley, so you get a lot of random shoppers, whereas the store on 79th st doesn't have such a high level of foot traffic, even though it is on Broadway. A new Filenes Basement is opening on Union Square by the end of the year. I have to agree about Century 21. Since they reopened after 9-11, I just don't find the selection there to be that great anymore. It certainily isn't the same, but again, worth a trip as our tastes vary and what may not appeal to me is another man's treasure. There's another discount store, Loftworks....in Chinatown which some people like. I find Daffys to be pretty much a dump, although the 34th st store does have a pretty good selection of Portalano winter accessories at deep discount.
