Sweater over the dress shirt look

If I wanted to try the typical sweater worn over an OCBD look, what sweaters do you recommend I start out (material?) with and where do I purchase them?

What climate are you wanting to wear it for? How formal?

Personally prefer crew/round neck for shirts without ties but a high v neck can be ok.

No tie, just a dress shirt under a sweater, only as formal as a dress shirt / sweater typically is -- Casual to Business Casual.

Climate will be Michigan Fall and Winter, everything from 50°F to 0°F. It will be worn inside in a cool office

I know it's opinion, but I'd like to hear some thoughts. What materials / type are easy to get and look good but not too expensive?

In my experience, that look works best with slim fit shirts and sweaters. Else, there is so much pillowing, and it makes it look weird. Also maybe button-down shirts and no wide spread collar. Make sure the collar stays below the sweater if you want to avoid the 70ies look...

Huh? Are you saying don't wear a shirt with a collar underneath it?

No, he is saying you should only use slim fit shirts and sweaters in this combo. A baggy shirt will have folds beneath the sweater, creating bulges in odd places.

In truth, it's probably just the shirt that needs to be slim fit.

I've seen some people on here (not naming names) wearing high roll neck sweaters then pulling their shirt collars up so the collar points are peeking out from the edge of the sweater's neck.

Don't do this!
