Thoughts on what to wear to a nice restuarant for dinner

Was wondering what is a good outfit to wear out to a nice restuarant. I would like atleast one of the items to be a sports jacket. What colors combinations would you wear? Would a black sports jacket be too dark?

I'd wear a navy sports jacket, light/medium grey pants, an ecru OCBD, and my red bow tie with the narrow yellow and blue stripes. And a pair of OTC argyle socks, with my Allen Edmonds Grayson tassel loafers, in oxblood.

I'm not sure how much that helps you, but you asked.

What color combinations would you like to wear? Why?

You will likely get relatively little support for wearing a black sports jacket, here in the Classic Menswear forum.

I know that I've never been tempted to buy or wear a black sports jacket. But hey, that's just me.

What's your reasoning against the black sports jacket? Too nightclub esque?

As for what I'd like to wear, something other than navy or charcoal would be nice. I don't like charcoal and Navy is too common, I was thinking a sports jacket of this color:

What seasons or time of day is the brown color appropriate for?

A black jacket that's clearly a sport coat, and not an orphaned suit jacket, could work. Maybe something heavily textured, such as velvet, paired with grey flannel pants, a white button-up, and a pair of black loafers.

Just don't do the black worsted wool jacket with blue jeans thing. It's what most guys do and it looks awful. Like they grabbed their only suit jacket out the closet so they could look dressier, but don't actually know how to put together a dressier outfit.

Navy may be a more common color, but well-fitting sport coats are rare. If you had a navy sport coat that fit well, the silhouette would be exceptional, not the color. The color would just make it easier to wear.

There is nothing wrong with a black blazer - Flannel, cashmere, or lambswool with 1/4" edges and seams and silver colored buttons. Pair it with medium gray trousers, a red paisley tie and a pink shirt.

We have been in business since 1945. I can count on one hand the number of black suits we have made. My customers opt for navy and dark gray- not black.  The exception to the "no black" is a black blazer- we have made many.

Jeans, tee-shirt and JBs probably the norm nowadays.

For me it would depend on the the type of restaurant, what else might be on the agenda, the season and whether afternoon or night.

I might pick a black (or dark brown, or charcoal) jacket if it was fall/winter night and it was also a bar or live music type night. Mid grey trousers usually work well with those dark jackets.

If it's a summery and warm night at a "nice" restaurant, I'd go for a lighter brown/indigo jacket in a cotton or linen-cotton, and lighter trousers.

The ensemble that guy is wearing in your post is okay for a lunch date--and as you can see from the snow in the window reflections, it's winter--but I personally don't wear jeans to a nice restaurant.

Honestly if the items fit well you can get away with nearly any color. Traditional would be a shade of grey, blue, brown.
