SW&D CHALLENGE: ENTRY-LEVEL/POVERTY TIER/PREVIOUS-LEVEL ie NO DESIGNERS ALLOWED (JULY 5-19)

Big ups to @zxcvb for hosting the previous challenge, much appreciated.

Creativity comes from constraint and this challenge's constraint is budgetary.

PREVIOUS-LEVEL CHALLENGE

- Jack White

We occasionally get the odd dingus coming into the forum complaining that their fit got no thumbs because they aren't wearing the right "brands". I believe this is a bogus line of thinking and I would like for y'all to prove it.

I understand that this is a forum dedicated to fashion, but it is called styleforum, not fashionforum, right? I think "Gangbanged by the Mr. Porter newsletter" is generally less cool than head-to-toe-qlo if the latter is skillfully executed.

RULES

1. No designer clothing. No MMM, no Schnieder, no Rick Owens, no Visvim, etc. If you have to ask, it's probably not allowed.

2. Shoes - No CP, no Alden, no Viberg, no baller nothing.

3. Sales - I don't care if those GATs were 98% off, they're not allowed. Think MSRP

4. Voting begins in two weeks - JULY 20th.

SUGGESTIONS:

1. VINTAGE/THRIFTED/DIY - I think this is where things can really be stepped up a notch. Bit of a grey area with thrifted brands. I trust your judgement, but PM or post any questions you might have ITT.

2. Mall shit - Uniqlo, Gap, Zara, etc. J Crew, Club Monaco tier is gonna be about the max allowed (no collab loopholes ie, TenC, Golden Bear, Alden, etc)

3. Footwear - Sneakers will be easy - Nike, Adidas, Converse, etc. Leather shoes/boots - Docs, Clarks...?

4. Doesn't have to be a WAYWT. Weather might not be cooperating, so feel free to just throw some stuff on, take a pic, and change. That said, mirror shots will be frowned upon, as usual!

5. Bonus points for polos :D

PRIZES!:

I take pictures of things for a living and the winner will be mailed five postcard sized, unframed prints of my photos. Also, maybe some such Vancouver-type thing. I'll think of something fun eventually, but there will definitely be prizes!

INSPO:
Actually, I don't really have any. Please PM me if you have any saved/bookmarked. In the meantime, I buzzed through WAYWT and grabbed some recent officially dope fits that could be conceivably comprised of entry-level shit;

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

It might be more difficult for some, but I think we should all be able to put something together, so I'm expecting all of you certified cool dudes to participate. Even you, @RegisDB9 I know you have some Abercrombie tucked away somewhere!

So dust off those basics, hit up some thrift shops, bust out that sewing machine, and let's do it!

This is not my entry (atleast not this mediocre picture of it) but this is what I wore yesterday

Hat: H&M

Jacket & shirt: Weekday

Pants: Filippa K
Boots: Dr Martens

This outfit probably costs less than what a lot of members might spend on a single knit

Lol except that c4est is prob wearing dries and Dior, cyc is slp visvim, Regis is all mmm and Lorcan is in eg 😌

N&F denim - permissible, or not entry-level enough?

Similar question.  I can probably do this, but I don't own any jeans, or pants of any kind, save workout pants, that aren't "designer".  Momotaro or Japan Blue jeans allowed?

Also, leather jackets - um... allowed or not?  I don't have any truly inexpensive leathers...

Yeah, I admire the idea but I guess I don't know how I feel about this. Hopefully some good vintage stuff gets posted.

Giving it a little thought, I'll answer my own question by saying no to N&F but yes to Unbranded, maybe with the following (extremely rough) guidelines on MSRP (at least as something I'll keep in mind):

footwear: $150
pants:$100
tops: $50
outerwear: $200
accessories: $100

IDK, maybe it's more about the spirit of the challenge rather than the $$$, like yes to Vans but no to EG x Vans.

I'll be interested to see who comes up with what. Especially if it involves a polo shirt.

to add onto nwi's suggestion, how about a hard msrp price limit instead of limiting it to basic brands?

The Poor Baller Style Farmer?

The Budget Style Farmer's $500 Guide to Survival?

Mo Monies Mo (Koppage) Problems?

I think that you have to wear pants though.  I draw a hard line before no pants.

Hmm, I may have underestimated everyone's ballerness. Rules aren't written in stone, I'm definitely open to fine-tuning. Participation was a bit low last time, so if this is too restrictive, maybe we should open it up a bit.

I like @nahneun and @notwithit's line of thinking with the $500 fit. Allows for a bit more flexibility. Maybe mull it over for a bit or keep the suggestions coming?

Yeah, my point though is that c4est could conceivably be wearing some random 70s band sweatshirt with Levi's. Visvim riffs on workwear/cowboy and flea market shit. SLP = 90s grunge. MMM has a line called "replica". Floral shirts are everywhere. The designers improved on the originals, but they were still inspired by cool dudes wearing inexpensive clothes or cool inexpensive items dug up by their underlings. Know what I mean?

I know how lame it is to use oneself as an example, but it's easy for me to remember, so bear with me:

Regis responded to this fit with "I'd wear that as is". Suit it Banana Republic... outlet. It's obviously no MMM, but it's alright. I suppose SF doesn't have too many outlet suits hanging in their closets for this to be viable (makes sense), but hopefully that helps explains my line of thinking.

Would add another 100$ to both footwear and outerwear (since we're talking msrp and not price paid), but besides that I think this could work.

Also like the suggestion of a total price limit, but in that case and using the term "style farmer" I think it would make more sense to count price paid instead of msrp, technically allowing any brand imaginable as long as the total doesn't exceed 500$ (for example)

Still think the initial rules are the best option though, but I might be in smaller minority of non-ballers than I would have guessed

Heres some inspiration. I dont knock any brands no matter how entry level because....well feast your eyes on circa 2009 all Lacoste Regis...Bottom button? You're welcome

I was thinking about this - my immediate assumption was that 'qlomaire, H&Mmmm, UU etc. high-low fashion collabs wouldn't be in the spirit of competition. But then on the other hand if you were genuinely on a budget you would definitely want to make use of that stuff, no? My favorite basic tees are my old UU ones which cost like $15 or whatever.

I was thinking only fast fashion/budget retailer stuff. No collaborations or eBay bargains; something that could be bought right now. Shoes and outerwear will be pretty hard I think. I guess Nike or Adidas you could buy at a Footlocker or other franchise retailer, which rules out most of my sneakers. Interested to see what people come up with. It is good styling challenge I think.

Some basic-ish fits I had lying around. I will try to come up with something a little more casual and less sporty for my entry.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

K-mart long sleeve tee with sleeves cut off $AUD5

K-mart basketball shorts $AUD10

Nike Air Force 1 $AUD160 (too expensive?)

Nike NSW backpack (definitely too expensive, was $320rrp I think)

Porter waist bag (designer, no good)

YSL sunglasses (designer, no good)

Kmart tee (same as above)

Surplus cargo pants $AUD25

Nike Free OG (was around $AUD75 at an outlet, no idea RRP)

Surplus eBay backpack $AUD30 shipped

eBay bandanna $AUD2 shipped

Nike Aeroloft $AUD40 outlet (borderline)

Nike Hyperwarm Flex ($80 eBay, was $200 rrp I think)

Kmart shorts $AUD10

Kmart leggings $AUD15

Kmart sneakers $AUD7 (they are surprisingly good for the price, nice soft rubber sole. Only thing I did was swap the laces)

Nike NSW backpack (as above)

I look forward to the entries for his challenge but I'm speculating that 75% of the forum is ineligible just from the shoe requirement hahaha.
