You can ask three people and get three different answers.  Most will tell you 3.5" is the "traditional" length....it's what I use for most.  Anything from 8-9cm is good in my opinion.

Really depends how your age, body shape, fashion consciousness as well as the industry and culture you are working in.

The younger guys tend to go for slimmer ties, between 2-3". At the bank I work in, I seldom see the upper management (usually between 35-50 years old) wearing anything slimmer than 3". And depending on your torso shape, you could get away with wider/slimmer ties as well.

Is a 4 inch considered too wide?

Typically, I get my ties at 9cm/3.5"

Read/heard a "rule" once that tie width should be roughly the same as your lapel width. Made a lot of sense to me, keeping things proportional.

4 in will look very dated. Even 3.75 is pushing it, though it'll look fine if you are tall and broad.

BB reduced their standard tie width to 3.25 several years ago.

I'm slim so I wear 3 inch ties and 8cm in European makers (which I think is about 3.15). I would say 3.25 will never go out of style and you can give or take .25 if you're slim or on the larger side

2.5 to 3 inches depending on how broad of a lapel you are rocking. And also how high of a button stance your Blazer has.

I wear 3.25. Anything much larger starts to look like the tie equivalent of Dad Jeans. Anything narrower looks like I'm trying too hard to be fashionable (with the exception of a silk knit tie at 2.5") . And at 3.25 it is equal or close to the width of my lapels. My shirt collars are also just large enough to reach the lapels. That makes them large enough to be in harmony with the tie and lapel width. The three look their best when working together.
