It's because he has been a long time Leave supporter, but 70% of Labour voters voted Remain. He didn't fight for his own side and so he doesn't realistically have a popular mandate any more.
I'm not convinced 70% of Labour supporters did vote remain, if you look at the traditional working class areas in the North/Midlands/Wales you saw a stronger leave vote.
In London you will find most of the working class have moved to Essex as the champagne socialists have moved in to traditional working class areas and driven up property prices
I spoke to a British Muslim in Bradford last night and he said his family and friends were divided same as everyone else, he said many of them had shops/take aways or family working in the NHS (3rd largest employer in the world!!) and were concerned about state pensions if immigration continued!!!
I think Corbyn wanted a leave result as revenge on the Thatcherites/Blairites
for destroying communities and sending jobs abroad/backing the invasion of Iraq
