Hey

I am going to school in NYC in january and I am having difficulty finding housing.

I am looking to get a room in the east village area and i am willing to pay 1100-1200.

If there any New York members that could tell me where to look (other than craigslist), it would be greatly appreciated

Trendy and cheap, relatively speaking of course, don't mix. What you will get in the East Village at that price will be very very very uncomfortable, especially if you plan on living alone. The East Village is not even a nice place, its hip and fun to hang out but so not worth it to live there, especially if you are going to be in school. Which school are you going to? Pick an area on the closest subway line and find a place out in the boroughs or find a roomate (i.e. roomates.com or other Craigslist alternative) and live uptown somewhere. Also be sure to look for "no fee" buildings (hard to find) or owner listed buildings. Brokers will rip you off like nothing else.

As for finding a place, check the NY Times online, there listings are at least legit as opposed to Craigslist. Check the realtors websites and see if you can find a way to contract bldgs or management agents directly. Living in the boroughs is nice. I just moved out of Brooklyn for commutation reasons but would have no problem moving back. Manhattan is fun/cool/hip etc. but I can tell you that if you plan on having a good time you will hemorrhage money...not a good thing when the loans are lurking around the corner. Of course you might be able to get a good deal in the East Village, if you are set on it, if you look hard enough. If you are not going to be home that often I suggest finding a roomate. That is the only way I can afford Manhattan (although I do live in an awesome bulding) and it seems to work well as I am barely here during the week and have my own room.

When you are in the East Village as a student try Vesekla on 9th St. and 2nd Ave.........24 Hr Polish Diner/Restaurant, great food and cheap by NYC standards.

If you have any other specific Q's PM me or post here.

Yah, I wouldn't want to live in the EV, let alone on that budget.

backpages.com or whatever it's called on the village voice's website has listings. Just go to the village voice website and look.

For the EV at that price, I'd say you're 4 years too late. If you want to share, you'll afford it, but it'll be lame. I pay in your price range for a small studio in Harlem, and other than Washington Heights or Queens or the Bronx, it was the best price on a studio I could find. Maybe deep Brooklyn you could get some single.

ok can someone clear this up for me - 1100-1200 per .... ?

Coz this is scaring the **** out of me .... given that replies indicate that this is a low budget.

I hope to move to NY one day (not anytime soon though) ... but is this per week/fortnight???

You can totally luck out now and then and find places in Manhattan (i.e. the real Manhattan, not 159th St) for $1500/month to yourself. My friend lives in the basement level (still has a window!) on 25th btwn. 9th/10th for $1450/month.

I'd rather live in the 100's then in the bowels of Chelsea.

OMG thank GOD! So the 1100-1200 is per month you guys reckon?

Coz I was gonna say - if that were LOW budget per week or fortnight I'd never have a chance of moving up there!

Just curious though - in comparison ... say a one bedroom/bathroom (no car space) studio/apartment say overlooking Central Park ... how much are we looking at? I mean to purchase!? And then say the same but in the "outer surburbs" - like a few stations from Time Square or whatever.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense - just trying to figure out real estate value.

Well, just keep in mind that anything in the 1000-2000 range is not going to get you a "Friends" type of spread. Of course, you can always go the route of being some Chelsea Queen's twink and live in a huge spread for nothing. It's not a lock, but if you are coming from the Midwest and are hairless, you have a pretty good chance.

And if you are hairy, please defer to my thread.

Well a one bed/bath isn't a studio; but, let's say
1br/1bath:
Actually being able to see the Park? $1.8-2.5 along CPW most likely in the mid60s-90s. To rent that same place probably $3000-$4000.
Along the park; but, no park view probably $1.2-2.0 to buy, to rent $2000-3000

Studio:
See the park: $1.2-1.8, $2500-3000
No park view: $775-1.1, $2000-3500
