Looking for a dress watch (w/leather strap) to wear daily with suit at law firm. Just graduated law school with lots o debt so my budget will not support something expensive. I don't know much about watches - just want something that will look good and keep the time. Feel free to send me a PM if you have something in your collection that youn might want to get rid off (I have no problem buying used as long as its from a reputable seller) Also feel free to give suggestions if youk now of a place to buy.

Thanks
AJB

AJB if you dont mind the brand name and just want something cheap but qualitative enough for good looks and a decent automatic movement,

I have some CJIABA watches brand new for sale and some of my old seikos that are still in excellent condition.
just search my threads you will see them.

You found your reputable seller. ^

The watches shoe is selling look very nice and the price can't be beat. They may be just the thing. That said, while watch fans will likely disapprove, with your criteria you may want to look at watches with quartz movements. They likely will keep better time (even when you're not wearing them) and generally will be much cheaper than watches with automatic (mechanical) movements.

AJB: I have one of these gruen watches new in box that I am planning to sell. It has a swiss ETA movement which alone is probably worth the price of the watch. I bought it for myself but it never cracked my watch rotation as I opt for some of my dad's vintage watches instead of this one. They usually sell for $60 to $80 on ebay lately. (They had sold for lower but there seems to be less available on ebay) I will sell this for $60 shipped CONUS.

Here are some specs and pics:
Gruen Swiss GSM014
Automatic movement with see-through back panel
All stainless steel
Dark blue dial with luminous hands and hour marks
Crocodile patterned genuine leather band with butterfly buckle
Water resistant 100ft/30m
Date window
Mineral glass
Signature "G" on the buckle
The size of the dial is 33mm wide (Excluding the crown) and 36mm long

I have never owned an automatic watch. Hopefully this wont become an addiction. (my famous last words when I purchased my 1st Borelli shirt b/c of this forum ). Can someone give me some info on how I should care for this watch - ie how do I wind it and how often should it be wound.

Thanks

I'd recommend a vintage Omega dress watch 50's-70's. You can get one for relatively cheap and you will have the name cachet of Omega.

Your watch will go out tomorrow. I sent you an e-mail to get you started on automatics. If you lurk around timezone, watchuseek, and watchnet there is a lot of information out there. Be careful those sights can feed an obsession as watchuseek even has forums for affordable watches. There are also some good threads on SF about automatics. Even a very spirited debate on watch winders.
Enjoy.

Sorry to ressurect a dead thread, but I'm in a similar situation to the OP. Does anyone have a decent leather band automatic watch for a young professional for sale? Same as the OP, I can't afford something too nice, but would like something that looks (and is!) decent quality. I am happy to buy used from a reputable dealer too. Thanks!

Just wanted to let you know I am very happy with the Gruen - has recieved a number of compliments. You can usually find it for ~ 50 on ebay although I have seen it go for as much as 250. If you dont mind vintage you might want to check on some older Gruen, Benrus, Wyler, Bulova. I am afraid I have become hooked but I dont have enough to spend on something expensive yet. Would love an Omega Constellation one day.
You can also check this site for less expensive stuff
