Suede Jacket Alterations

Hello!

Looking for a bit of advice - has anybody successfully had a suede jacket altered? I have a rather nice one that I bought many years ago and for whatever reason never really wore. I have since rediscovered it and would like to give it an outing, except I have rather changed shape in those passing years and now find myself a much fitter version of the previous me!

The jacket has quite a 'boxy' appearance when worn now and seems to have an abundance of material under the arms, so there should be something for a tailor to work with.

Has anybody had something similar done with a suede coat and if so, who did you use - i'm on the Berks, Surry, Hants border so close enough to London for recommendations in town if required.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi

Although I can't recommend a specific tailor, I did have a thicker suede jacket altered a couple of months ago. I had the size of the point collar reduced, the sleeve diameter reduced (especially around the upper arms) and the sides taken in. So it can  definitely be done, but it wasn't cheap. The collar was no problem, but getting a good alignment between the new (smaller) sleeve size and the armscye (armhole) was a little tricky. Luckily, because I was also getting the sides of the jacket taken in (which it sounds like you want to do to remove the excess fabric), the tailor was also able to reduce the size of the armscye to match the sleeve. Overall, the amount of excess suede removed wasn't very significant (about 1" at the sleeves and 1" to 1.5" to take in the sides), but it had a real impact on the fit and look of the jacket.

Hope this helps!

Thank you JohnAAG

Appreciate you taking the time to respond and it's good to hear that it is possible, I know that working with leather and suede can require more heavy duty equipment, so i guess i just need to find a tailor with the gear to tackle the job.

Thanks again

Ash
