New jacket, shirt matching?

Hi all,

I've been lurking around here for a while, decided I should finally chime in with something!

I got myself a new jacket the other day, my first step out of solid jackets and I'm really happy with it. However, I've come to realise that I seem to have a bit of a thing for variations of checks: gingham, tattersall etc. which has left me a little worried that a lot of my shirts aren't going to work. I thought I should get a bit of feedback from you all, so here are a few examples.

Apologies the lighting/colours aren't quite right, just phone pics. Basically I'm wanting to know if I'm going to get away with these jacket/shirt combos, or if I'm cutting it too fine. I realise that the last one isn't a check, but I'm concerned about the scale of the patterns.

Thanks in advance, and apologies if I've posted in the wrong place

While you haven't technically posted in the wrong place, this type of questions is both better received and of more use to members in the Menswear Advice forum, where I will move it.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Fok.

Good rule of thumb with matching patterns they must be greater or less than in scale. So, if one pattern is the same size as the next then do NOT put them together as it would make things look too busy. Good example; would be a windowpane blazer with a small check shirt the scale of both patterns are very different so it works great together.

Thanks. I was interested in a couple of these shirts, such as the first one. The checks are very small, but when you look at the black and blue checks separately they end up being very similar to the jacket. The last shirt, it's a medallion design rather than check, but I think the scale is too similar. Do the same rules apply with such designs?

Yes the rule does still apply no matter the pattern as in your case medallion paired with check. It would still need to be different enough in scale in order to optimize the look.

Not necessarily do you have to go with a solid colored shirt. I do pattern on top of pattern all the time actually 3 if you include my tie. Just work on how to pair the patterns together by following the "rule" and you will be just fine! Have fun and enjoy the feeling you can get when you put something you really like. A good place to start learning is here (SF) also I like the You tube Channel "Real Men Real Style" and the gentleman's Gazette.

Any patterns you would recommend looking into? A lot of stripes seem to be similar in scale to this jacket.

If you want to go with stripe then Bengal stripe or small pencil stripe would work well. Gingham plaid tattersall, large check are all available to you once you apply the rule.
