Advice on wedding attire

Hello all. New poster but occasional reader. Thanks for all the advice so far.

Have a wedding with a confused dress code this July in NYC. Blacktie is on the invite but the groom tells me that was only to get people to wear a shirt and tie and that a tux is not expected. I know other people are going with semi-formal or even summer suits.

Confusion aside I'm going with a charcoal suit - the napoli from suitsupply - and would like some advice on how to dress it up.

I was thinking either black jack Erwin Joe's, or some burgundy Allen Edmonds for shoes. They are a very dark burgundy.

I have a navy pindot tie and was going to wear a white or possible red pocket square.

I'm also thinking of wearing suspenders (black) just to mix it up a bit as with a belt it looks a bit like an interview suit.

Any thoughts? I don't dress up often as you can probably tell.

That all sounds pretty good to me.  I would go with the white square and black shoes.

Thanks Murlsquirl. Are you thinking black because it's a more formal look or because it would look better with black suspenders?

I'm guessing the white pocket square is preferred for the formality as well? I have one with a lavender trim I was trying out but it seems to be a lot of white. I didn't mention I'm wearing a white shirt.

Probably over thinking this.......

Suspenders are not supposed to be visible. Therefore, that does not determine the shoe color. Since "black tie" was stated, even less formally dressed people will choose black shoes, and anyone who doesn't probably will stand out in a bad way.

A white pocket with a lavender trim isn't ideal, but it's close enough to solid white that no one should object.

They will definitely be visible when I'm embarrassing myself on the dancefloor!

Thanks for the tip on the pocket square. I'll get a plain white one.
