What You Got for Christmas

I got a very special gift from my father. He was diagnosed with leukemia two weeks ago and has been in a hospital ever since, after feeling perfectly fine at the beginning of the month and had felt quite horribly very quickly. He has already been through his first round of Chemo and his progress is being monitored.

Two nights before Christmas he told me and my two brothers what he had planned on getting us if he had not been confined to his first ever hospital bed. He told me he wanted to get me a pair of nice shoes that I can wear in my wedding in 5 months. He handed me over the money he was going to use and told me to get something special.

Personally for me I knew I wanted to get a pair I could have for life, just in case this is his last Christmas gift to me. (However I pray there are more to come)

I went out and bought a pair of black Renzo Ferragamo's from their Tramezza line. The are beautiful. One piece of leather makes the whole upper of the shoe. I considered lesser options, but it just did not feel right. The store manager let me borrow a beautiful brown pair so I could wrap, open on Christmas morning and show him. She was gracious to add some shoes trees to go with them as well.

When I got to my last gift on Christmas morning, I opened the Ferragamo box to show him what he got me. He absolutely loved them. He asked to see them one more time after I initially put them away. It was a very special Christmas.

Nice! Not the price, but what your brother did.

My mom and dad are still happily married but my dad buys me gifts every year just from him. He got me 8 oxxford shirts which I knew I was getting as I had to go down and get measured for them. He also got a new .270 rifle and a DE razor which were both suprises. From my mom/dad together I got a pair of Allen Edmonds loafers, a pair of everyday cheapo wear J-Crew light suede mocs, Seiko MarineMaster watch, iPhone (got way early), trip to Florida, Bowl Tickets for my school, lots and lots of socks and boxers, 4 pairs of J-Crew khakis, and some other stuff I can't remember. My sister got me a new Coach slim wallet with matching card wallet with a Ben Franklin in each of them for good luck. My best friend's mom bought me a Red limited Seiko Monster and my gf bought me a Seiko Sumo and a Peter Millar cashmere pullover. I got some other stuff and that sounds like a lot but I custom blinds for my parents house installed for my mom and got my dad a 64 chevy, a Seiko bullhead watch restored (I have a matching one), and restored a vintage clock for him from his dad's bar.

I was really fortunate gift-wise this Christmas as I received a lot of great stuff: a pair of Clarks, some great pop-up books.

My dad found a beautiful collection of Little Nemo in Slumberland cartoons.

My younger brother hit the nail on the head with the two Persepolis books. My brother is hard to get gifts for, but I think that my parents and I did well for him this year. I got him the illustrated book and DVD of The Snowman, which is a cartoon we always watched when we were little. I also got him a bunch of records (Boards of Canada, Air, Jesu/Eluvium...) without him having a record player. Hey, at least they look cool!

The big surprise for me was the the first book of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's autobiography. I'm really excited to read it. And lastly, I think that my Mom is still working on knitting two pairs of dark navy cashmere mittens for me before I head back to school.

Even though coming home from school always gives me a neckache and exhausts me (even though I do close to nothing while I'm home), I always enjoy seeing my family. Happy New Year everyone.

The best gift is to be in good health...Sounds basic and patronizing but believe me ,that's the most important thing in the world...

I wish you merry Christmas to all of you and your family ...

I received around eight hundred dollars, all cash. It sucks. The reason is that everyone in the family said I am hard to please, so they don't want to surprise me. Yeah, but it's nice to get something other than cash every Christmas.

OTOH, it's not so bad. I can now afford to buy a few sweaters which I need and a pay for my text books come next quarter. In retrospect, I'm happy.
