How do you respond to this ... ?

ok so I am sure (well I surely hope :P) that you guys have had family (those, like myself in college, probably your parents; others, probably your wives) say something to this effect: "[insert name], if you keep buying "these" clothes you're going to find it very hard financially in the future ... blah, blah, blah" so ... how do you respond? My response was pure ignorance :P

"In the future I'll just have to make more money than you Dad."

Why does your family know your clothes budget? The easiest way to avoid a sore subject is to, well, avoid the subject.

What does that mean? Are they saying you spend too much money on clothes in general or are they saying you should be buying suits or trad business/professional attire?

I come from a very well to do family, yet one that doesn't spend much on clothes at all. So I avoid the subject entirely. If they ask where I got a piece from, I mumble a website knowing full well theyll never look. As long as you're not wearing d2squared, armani, and other loud brands, it's not that hard to remain conspicuous, even with your family.

Well, presumably, people in your family do spend some money on some sort of luxury goods, so just point out that nice cars/watches/wine/art/whatever are no less frivolous than clothes.

Are they concerned that you have added too much debt?

If you're making the money to spend on the clothes, I don't see what their problems is. If they're supporting you, they are entitled to give their opinion on how you're spending their money. If their giving you advice for the future when you're on your own, then it'll be your responsibility then anyways and you'll learn pretty quickly how much you can or can't spend on clothes.

Yea good question! At 20, I'm still living at home - my sister recently married and moved out ... so whenever she drops in she finds the need to rummage through my cupboard to check out my latest purchases!

Don't get me wrong though guys - its not like I'm spending anywhere near as much as the most of you do! I wish I had the budget too though!!!

I guess its just that working part-time, paying my way through college and then dropping 350 on Nudie jeans and 150+ on a shirt is like CRAZZZY to them!

Yea they're saying I'm spending too much in general - in proportion to what I'm earning. I mean I'm not in debt or anything - but thats only because thankfully I don't own a credit card! I guess from their perspective if I'm: earning X a month and only saving half X for college fees then blowing the remainder on clothes - it seems stupid to them!

Yea totally agree! I mean they're supporting me in that I still live at home - don't pay rent etc. But they DO NOT spend money on my clothes! Only if its a B-Day present/X-Mas etc. Otherwise its my own money thats "wasted" (their words not mine) on clothes.

I'm 25 and a little while back I too spent every dime I had on clothes. My family didn't comment on it but I'm quite sure they would've should I ever have come to ask them money to pay the rent (living on my own since age 18).

BTW $350 for Nudies that hurts In Europe they can be had for around $150...

Yea that's the thing ... I would like to move out - but the reality is that I would no longer be able to make such purchases. I hope to move out at about 25. Hmmmm .... that actually brings me to another question for all you guys - when did you/plan to move out of home? I might actually make a new thread about that one ....

Oh and you don't need to tell me! It took me ALOT to hand over that kind of cash for a single pair of jeans! But I did a quick check ... 150 Euro's right?

150.00 EUR = 248.113 AUD
So yea, down under Nudies are overpriced by about $100!
