I will openly admit that I know nothing about how to buy tie that will go with a shirt... So I have come to all of you. Any ideas on what would go well with this shirt? I will be wearing it with a medium grey suit (I tend to prefer a conservative look). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One preliminary thought was the following, in either red or pink:

For whatever reason it doesn't look like a dressy shirt but I'd probably recommend like a dark burgundy solid knit tie or like dark purple/navy as first looks for tie colors.

Thanks for the advice.

Out of curiosity, why doesn't it seem like a dressy shirt? I guess the photo doesn't do the shirt justice. It actually seems to be a halfway decent dress shirt.

Shirts with striped patterns like that are hard to pair with ties. Your best and safest bet will always be solid colors, as IChen suggested. A burgundy grenadine would be a good choice. You won't find many people on this forum that are a fun of red ties, but burgundy is great.

Well I just feel since the stripes aren't next to each other and small it just seems like a casual shirt. The pocket also doesn't feel dressy for me. But I mean striped shirts aren't easy to pair with.

Fair enough. I still have a lot to learn. Thanks again to both of you for the advice!

I mean maybe it is a dress shirt but I can't know for sure because I'm not touching it or looking at it in person. Just with the stripes design and the pocket, immediately it makes me think casual.

No worries. Poor photo and the shirt not having been pressed surely contributed to the casual look.

Any suggestions on a decent burgundy grenadine tie?

He has a few other possibilities as well. Not cheap, but completely handmade, and worth the money for what it is.

Kent Wang has cheaper ones: http://www.kentwang.com/ties/grenadine-burgundy.html

And Chipp. even less expensive: http://www.chippneckwear.com/wine-grenadine-tie/

So, you have choices.

Thanks for the suggestions! I went to the local men's store today ( I live in a sartorial desert) but didn't find anything to my liking.

One more question to attest to my cluelessness... would these be considered appropriate to wear as a guest to a wedding?

I've never been to a wedding but I'd probably wear a solid white dress shirt myself. No pockets, no stripes or anything, just white.

These days, probably, yes. However, a white shirt is typically more common. I would suggest that you have a couple of good white shirts on hand in any case.

I agree that a solid color would be the easiest option. Playing with fabrics can twist it.

If you feel it you can go with 2 or 3 colors very - very large stripes, like Burgundy/Navy/Brown or Beige/Navy/Brown.

Heck..I didn't know this Vanda. Seems to be amazing stuff - on track to be another great discovery from SF.
