The one I have is about 2 years old, before that I had a computer for about 4 years that my old roomate built me. I'm out of the loop as to what the going rate and standard for memory, RAM and all that **** is.

More seriously, look at the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads. They're still pretty solid buys.

Right now I'd recommend an XPS M1330 for most people. There have been some great deals on these as discussed on dealsites like slickdeals. For you (read: moneybags), how about www.dynamism.com? World's lightest laptop with optical drive. 1.88lb

Actually I'd probably get the Vaio G2 with a flash hard drive - no moving parts. Optical drive. 1.89lb

As always, I must sing the praises of ASUS notebooks. I've had my W3j since it came out (over a year now, I guess) and it is a fantastic machine.

I won't buy it Online, so I guess it should be limited to a brand that is carried at Best Buy. Those ones under 2lbs seem great. I haven't really taken this with me all that often when I travel since it feels like a brick.

****...I went to that website. Those little F***ers are almost $4k?

What's the best bet in the $1500 range?

Macbook. Customer service makes it entirely worth it, especially if you drag your laptop around with you on occasion.

Or if you need to remain in the dark ages, the new Asus EEPC is cool.

Got my T60 in the mail today. For a PC it is a sturdy, though still falls way short compared to the metal Macbooks. Has a nice screen, though not as nice as the macs. Pretty fast with stock settings. The touchpad on it is abysmally small, now I see why people are against the touchpads, however on the mac they are large with 2 finger scrolling and are quite usable.

All in all, for the price I paid and given the fact that I need a Windoze machine, I'm quite happy, plus it gives me the option of tucking away Linux on it somewhere.

Why is that? Just curious.

Out of the suggestions so far, the Sony VAIO G2 looks the coolest. I would never touch a Dell or HP with a 10 foot pole.

No Mac, that seems odd for a person like you. Macs are the Jil Sander of computers.

Once you go Mac, you'll never go back. And, you can run windows on it too with ease. The new ones come out in a few weeks, take a look. Trust me.

I forgot about the fact that Macs can now run Windoze. Maybe I jumped the gun buying my IBM, though I could probably sell it for what I paid..
