What's the best way to get jet black hair?

I've been wanting to do my hair black for a while, but I'm always really hesitant to jump into doing anything because I'm really protective of my hair.

I was thinking of doing a henna + indigo dye, but it seems pretty messy and complicated. On the other hand, it's supposedly actually quite good for your hair, and some of the results here look really nice. Should I bother with all that stuff or just get a regular hair dye? Does anyone here have any particular brands they swear by?

Get it done professionally or at least have someone who knows what they are doing help you. Plus you will need to deal with your roots showing as your hair grows so you will need retouching semi-frequently (especially if your hair is lighter than dark brown).

It's always best to get it professionally done as the previous poster said, but you can always use semi permanent color when going darker. It should fade out over time without minimal regrowth. However, there's always the possibility that if you use home color you use could 'stain' your hair and some color may remain, giving a blotchy effect.

Henna is a stain / semi permanent color (IIRC) and I'm not sure what the effects would be. Henna has been around for a long time but I'm not sure how good it is these days...

I agree with the previous posters about having it done professionally for the first time. Find out what they use and perhaps you can touch it up yourself at home. There is a professional haircolour called Second Nature that is sold at beauty supply stores; it is a brand that haircolourists commonly use on men. It can be mixed with either a 10 volume developer (semi-permanent) or a 20 volume developer (permanent). If you are going to try it at home, I would use the 10 volume for the first attempt; it will be less damaging to your hair and can be used more often (to cover roots).

Use semi-permanent rather than permanent and top it up for as long as you want to keep it and you'll avoid the issue of roots/looking like a horrible mallrat teenager... the darker semi-permanent dyes that my missus uses last a lot longer than they say on the packet.

If you do go permanent, make sure to use a green-black or blue-black cast dye as they're better on your hair for some reason (old knowledge from once upon a time being a 15 year old Deftones fanatic, ha).

Best internal method I know of is ingesting the chinese root herb Ho shou wu which translates to " Mr. Ho's hair turns black". It's a kidney tonic and superior herb in TCM pharmacololgy. You can find it in pill form at health food stores under the name Foti. BTW this herb does wonders for girding a man's loins such that he will be the man he was always meant to be if you know what I mean.

ps: It also works wonders for kidney stone pain. A friend/co-worker was having a bout with stone pain and I suggested a bottle of shou wu chi which is the liquid tonic version of the ho shou wu root. I took him an herb shop in Boston on Washington St. I bought the $2.95 bottle. He thought it was bullshit until he drank a swig. He came to me a few minutes later telling me his once excruciating pain was now absolutley gone. Now I thought he was bullshitting me. He has since moved back to Spain but whenever he visits Boston he buys some of the stuff.

black hair is the easiest to do and is the one color that would be safe to do at home.

regarding blue-black, brown-black, et al, your skin tone will be the best deciding factor on whether to go with a warm, cool, or neutral black.
