love her.

for those of you that have heard her version of "Love Me or Leave Me", i never knew that she was a classically trained pianist and she most likely improvised the piano solo in that song (yeah yeah yeah, she ripped it off from Bach...still freakin' cool because it swings like a mutha).

Nina Simone has a very dignified and almost intimidating presence; you can hear that slight disdain in her voice. She wasn't called the High Priestess of Soul for nothing.

I'm obsessed with Nina. Forbidden Fruit is one of my favorite albums of all time. When I'm home alone, I put it up ostentatiously loud, and shake my tush to it. I hope Mike isn't associating her vocal androgyny with having no emotion.

Dame Shirl has one of the most mind-blowing voices ever recorded. Simple as that. If you watch/listen to recent performances, her voice packs the same punch it did 20 years ago. It's really hard to believe that the woman is 70.

I shouldn't have said she was devoid of emotion. That's nonsense, she evoked a hell of a lot of emotion. I just don't like her voice all that much.

However, her version of "Love Me or Leave Me" is truly stellar.

Saw her first show one night at El Matador in North Beach after the San Francisco Auto Show in 1967 or 1968. Intense doesn't even begin to describe her. Her covers of House of the Rising Sun and I Loves You Porgy sent me off to Tower Records for some vinyl that same night after the show.

"Sinnerman" is something of a religious experience, especially at the end; her hesitation is what makes it.

I had never heard her stuff before but I just listened to these too and they grew on me quite a bit. Great video soundtrack music, especially sinnerman.
