For someone with a modest income what clothing items should I spend a little extra on? Right now it's shoes and suits

I buy allen edmunds and Loake shoes and belts.  I buy Lauren Ralph Lauren and Micheal Micheal Kors suits.  The rest (shirts, ties, socks, slacks) I buy whatever looks good and fits from Macys.  Given that sort of general budget is there any adjusting I could do?

Thanks.  I know the market I'm in isn't exactly what this forum focuses on but I'm sure if you know all about the nice brands you may know a bit about the lower end options.

Stick with what you are doing, make sure that they are clean and well presented. If that is the market you can afford then no one will think the worse of you.

I agree wholeheartedly.

That said, I haven't seen many ties I like at department stores. But on the flip side, I can't bear to spend too much on ties.

If it doesn't bust the budget, switch to shirts from Tyrwhitt (but never pay more than $40 a shirt from them- the MSRP is bull, they have constant sales), and for ties, go to discount stores- Marshalls/TJ Maxx gets Brooks Brothers and Polo stuff in for good prices on occasion, Nordstrom Rack has good stuff for decent prices. E-bay and thrift stores can also be great sources for lightly used ties that are way above macy's quality if you know what you're looking for.

But fit is more important than anything. A well tailored $200 suit looks much better than a poorly fitting $2000 one. Shirts matter less if they stay under the jacket, as long as the collar is right. Cheap ties are often fine, just in classic patterns and colors. Shoes matter a lot, but sounds like you've already got that prioritized.

Also, buy different suit brands. There shouldn't be such a gap in quality between suits and shoes. There surely is something better available for several hundred dollars, probably via the Internet.
