Hello all,

First time posting. A friend has asked me to speak to a large group of high school freshmen and sophomores about how to dress professionally and I wanted to reach out to this community for some opinions that I could share. In my speech I am trying to cover some of the big fouls like not ironing, ill fitting clothes, shoes that are too casual and what you should invest a little extra money into to build a wardrobe etc...

However, these are kids that are still growing so it's a little hard to suggest they invest too much into clothes since they are most likely still growing. I'll probably suggest if they want to invest in clothes they focus on accessories that won't be grown out of like watches, ties etc...

I'd love to hear what advice this community would give to these kids. Anything would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It might be more helpful if the term "professional dress" were clarified more. These kids are going to be around 14 and 15 and a long way from entering any kind of "profession" as the term is commonly understood. Moreover, as we all know, different professions have very different standards of dress--an investment banker, a lab researcher, a college professor and an IT guy are all going to turned out rather differently. Or is this more advice to the kids on how to be presentable when applying for a first job in a year or two, e.g., wool pants (or at least khakis) in preference to jeans; shined leather shoes in preference to sneakers; a belt; a clean, properly ironed and tucked-in "button" shirt instead of a rumpled Tee or hoodie, that kind of thing?
