I agree, Thierry is not Philippe. The 5227 is great, but it could have been phenomenal with a little less of what he likes to call "aggression." That said, the Patek catalog is vast compared to Lange's, AP's or Vacheron's. There are easily a dozen or two absolutely gorgeous watches that are dead-on with the classic Patek aesthetic.

From personal experience, I can tell you the service is top notch. Above and beyond even. Helps that I live in Manhattan and can walk over to Rockefeller Center, but still.

On the PP versus Geneva Seal matter, the finishing speaks for itself. I don't think anyone would disagree finishing quality has only gotten better over the years. It was more or less steady state for decades until the display back phenomena and pressure from Lange to make finish quality more obvious.

Just curious -- which Patek did you buy and what was the reason for the service? Thanks.

When you claim that Rolex movements contain cheap plasticky parts and that their main competitors are Tissot and Fossil, you undermine what could be thoughtful, useful conversation with misinformed, trollish bullshit. Calling you out on it is not an ad hominem. It's cutting to the chase.

Blind, unsupported statements like "Patek finishing isn't what it used to be" are similarly pointless and distracting to productive conversation, and go to the heart of what is wrong with the online watch hobbyist universe. It is riddled with self-perpetuating, gossipy, fad-driven, under-informed hearsay. Someone read something someplace else and passed it on, but doesn't really know what they are talking about. Or at best, they saw a photo (as in this case) they don't know how to interpret and drew unwarranted conclusions.

Just as with classic men's clothing, it is beneficial to understanding watches to first endeavor one's best to understand the status quo and orthodoxy before adopting impulsive, contrarian views.

Before everyone responds to the bolded portion in an uproar, can I point out for a minute that Foo enjoys trolling threads and getting everyone riled up before quietly exiting, presumably while smiling from his enjoyment of said uproar he caused.

He knows he is passing off subjective opinions as objective facts, the same as he knows the effect the bolded suggestion will have on the participants in this thread.

Keep saying the same thing over and over and maybe you'll make it true.

I've not shied away from backing my thoughts with knowledge, information, and examples. That they may not be opinions that float with TWAT groupthink does not make me a troll.

Maybe you should be directing your criticism at the many others who populate this thread with unsupported, specious claims.

You made a silly claim that Patek finishing is worse than it used to be. You made an even sillier accusation that Patek finishing is "second or third tier." These statements are not supported by general knowledge of the watch industry and movement finishing, Patek's history, or specific examples. I provided you all of the above to demonstrate that your claims are false.

Cocksack accuses Rolex of using cheap parts in their movements, without bothering to understand why certain components are "plastic looking." I explained to him that they use teflon-coated gears. Someone who doesn't know that is someone who never bothered to learn about Rolex movements to even a basic degree and shouldn't be opining on them.

Mimo claimed that depreciation on Lange is no worse than Patek. I provided specific examples (with reference to common, basic models nonetheless), demonstrating that Lange depreciation is 2-5x worse.

And yet, I am the troll? Maybe, just maybe, it's time for TWAT to re-examine some of its commonly-accepted wisdom.

When did I call you a troll?

You do mix watch knowledge into your inflammatory rhetoric. It would be nice if you wanted to discuss things without all the song and dance because you are very knowledgeable.

Nevertheless, the pictures you finally provided did not prove me wrong. I'm sure you'll espouse yet another long reply to this and then we'll go back and fourth the rest of the day but I view the finishing on the 12-600AT as overall better than the modern calibers and you don't. There are nuances to it so again I'll say overall better.

Some people are like a dog with a bone and will not let go. Perhaps we will all sleep better if you could just agree Foo, that in your opinion Patek's finishing is as good as ever and let the whole thing rest without having to persuade everyone that yours is the only valid opinion.

Ah, the ol' wrist cheese.

A soft toothbrush with warm water and dish soap will take care of it. An ultrasonic cleaning bath every year or two is also a good practice for the bracelet (and only the bracelet); it'll make it last longer by getting rid of the abrasive grit that causes "bracelet stretch", which doesn't actually involve stretching at all.

Patrimony extra plate? I think I posted the white gold version of this, maybe a little newer, in the first page or two of the original thread as the best looking dress watch ever. It is certainly my favorite. The high point of this watch was around 2000 or so. I don't like the current version nearly as much a they changed the hands and markers. The stick hands and markers, with applied cross and thin, straight lugs are perfect (the lugs I am thinking of are just a tiny, little but different than yours).

I didn't use the word "cheap". That's a word you've inserted. So you've added straw-man to ad hominem and general rudeness.

And you've already conceded that there are plasticky-looking parts (the phrase I did use) inside Rolexes - Teflon is a plastic. By doing so, you further conceded (although perhaps you don't realise it) that in fact I'm well-informed.

You really are tiresome. Have a look at the other comments about you on the last two pages. Everybody now is starting to wish you'd just go away.
